What do you do with all your excess katanas?
From the opening hours of Assassin's Creed Shadows, you'll begin to amass quite a large number of different gear. From katanas to headpieces to full armor, your inventory will soon be full of different gear that you either can't use or don't want to use. While there is no carrying capacity limit in Assassin's Creed Shadows, logic would dictate that you could either sell or break down this gear so that it can serve some kind of purpose.
However, Assassin's Creed Shadows doesn't seem to feature a dedicated salvage button in the inventory and there are no vendors to be found in the opening hours. So, what do you do with your unwanted gear?
How to sell gear in Assassin's Creed Shadows

The best way to get rid of any gear you no longer want in Shadows is to sell it to a merchant. Despite how it might seem, there are merchants located in various towns and settlements across Japan. They're not too prevalent and can be difficult to find, but vendors do exist and are willing to take anything you have in your inventory in exchange for currency.
Assassin's Creed Shadows features four different types of merchants that all have a different icon on your map. The merchant types are: Ornament Vendors, Gear Vendors, Port Traders, and Itinerant Vendors. When you first visit a merchant, you'll see a tutorial on these different vendor types and how to use them.
Basically, though, all you need to do is approach a merchant when you see one, ask to see their shop, and then sell off any gear you want by swapping tabs. You're able to see all of your "valuable items" en masse by clicking the dedicated button at the bottom of the sell screen. Valuable items have no use aside from earning currency.

Unfortunately, there is no way to sell gear en masse, so you have to sell each item one at a time. Moreover, every common piece of gear you have usually only goes for around 20 gold, so it's more about clearing your inventory than earning currency to buy additional gear.
Speaking of purchasing gear, you can also use merchants to buy items for Yasuke and Naoe. However, the merchant's items in their shop entirely depends on what type of vendor you're at. If you're at the Ornament Vendor, don't expect to buy any kind of gear, for example.

Can you break down gear for materials in Assassin's Creed Shadows?
Now that you know about buying and selling gear in Assassin's Creed Shadows, what about salvaging your unwanted gear? It could be a good way to earn materials for your Hideout or perhaps earn you other materials you can use in the future.
This isn't possible in Shadows, however. The game does not feature any sort of salvage process, meaning the only way to get rid of gear from your inventory is to sell it to a vendor. While you can always keep the gear you amass, it can be difficult to sift through everything you might want to use later on, especially once you start getting to the higher levels.
