We’ve got you covered with the basics and a few tips on how to lockpick chests, doors, and everything else in Oblivion Remastered.

Not every door or chest will be easily accessible. If you're playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, you might need a lockpick to get into some places. They vary in difficulty and your skills as a thief will determine just how well you can break and enter.

You get a handy tutorial pretty early on in the game, but if that still doesn't make it simple for you, then we've got you covered.

When a chest or door is open, you can simply interact with it and it will open up. Then you can enter the building or take the contents from within. If its locked, though, you'll need to use a lockpick and complete the minigame to gain entry.

Before you interact with the locked object, it will inform you that it is locked and it will tell you the difficulty of the lockpick minigame in Oblivion Remastered. The first time you try, the tutorial message appears.

Basically, there are multiple slots with different tumblers. You'll need to move from slot to slot, pushing the tumblers up with your lockpick. When it reaches the top, listen for a specific sound and press the confirm button to successfully pick that tumbler.

Get all of them locked in place and you'll be able to enter the restricted area or gather the items from the enclosed container. This is all about timing, so a good tip is to take it easy and only pick locks you know won't be interrupted by an enemy or where you won't get caught by the owner.

Assuming you're on PC, here are some step-by-step instructions and tips:

  • Moving the pick back and forth with your mouse is what we feel works best
  • Push your mouse forward to lift the pick into the tumbler
  • Quickly press Space when you hear the metallic sound and move onto the next one
  • Use the Auto Attempt feature if your Security skill is high enough and see if you get lucky
  • Get the Skeleton Key item and your lockpicks will never break
  • You can always do a Mage build and use magic to open any tricky locks for you

How to find lockpicks

There are several ways to obtain lockpicks in Oblivion Remastered. Because yours will break on the higher difficulty locks if you are struggling to complete the sequence. If you run out, then search for more in these areas/scenarios:

  • Buy lockpicks from Ongar if you are part of the Thieves Guild
  • Some general merchants may sell lockpicks at times
  • Find lockpicks in chests or among defeated enemies' remains
    • Bandits are your best source when it comes to enemies
