Beldum starts one of the strongest evolution lines in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, so here’s how to catch it.

There are some Pokémon in Lumiose City that you won't be able to catch until you're nearly done with your playthrough. One of these rare mons is Beldum, which kicks off the Metagross evolution line. Beldum is not only rare to find in the wild in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but it's also one of, if not the most difficult Pokémon to catch during the story phase of the game.

To see exactly how you can add Beldum to your Pokédex in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, check out the guide below. As a warning, there are small spoilers for the main story in this guide.

Beldum is located underneath the Team Flare Cafe in Lumiose City. You won't be able to enter this location until you're on Mission 35 in the main story of Pokémon Legends: Z-A. This is around the time when you're trying to find out who Grisham is so you can battle them in the Z-A Royale.

When you gain access to the cafe and go through all of the dialogue with Grisham and Griselle, you'll be able to head underneath it. This is where Lysandre Labs is located, and you'll be tasked with finding an Elevator Key through the lab to gain entry to additional levels.

Fortunately, you don't necessarily need to get the Elevator Key to find Beldum, but if you follow the main path of Lysandre Labs, you'll be able to accomplish both goals. Beldum is located on the west side of the lab in the square, purple room on your map. You'll find a level 49 Beldum here as well as a level 50 Metang, which is Beldum's evolved form. You can see exactly where to go by looking at the map screenshot below.

To get to that location, you'll need to acquire both the Level A and Level B Key Cards throughout Lysandre Labs. Simply follow the paths of the labs and look for shiny objects on tables to get the key cards. You'll also need to turn on power generators in each section to power up the Warp Machines, which teleport you around.

The easiest way to reach Beldum is to start in the beginning room, head through the Level A door to your right, and then go south through the green door. Here, take a sharp right, enter through the Level B door, and then take your first left to enter the Beldum room. Of course, you'll have to first go through other parts of the lab to acquire those two key cards.

If you want to catch either as quickly as possible, stick with Beldum, as Metang is simply too difficult to catch even with Ultra Balls. I also recommend you save before entering the room with Beldum and Metang, as if you can't catch either one, you'll have to wait for a few minutes before both respawn again.

Why won't Beldum stay in the Poké Ball?

If you have managed to find Beldum and started the process of trying to catch it, then you've likely run into the issue of it not staying in the Poké Ball. Beldum actually has the same catch rate as a Legendary Pokémon, so it's incredibly difficult to catch with just an Ultra Ball. You also likely don't have a Master Ball at this point, and wasting one on Beldum wouldn't be a great idea.

The way I was able to catch Beldum was by using a Pokémon that knew the Hypnosis/Sleep Powder move, using that move on Beldum while it was full HP, and then throwing a Dusk Ball at it. The Dusk Ball isn't necessary, as an Ultra Ball would work just as well. However, putting Beldum to sleep is going to be the best way to ensure Beldum stays in the ball.

Of course, you can also simply try to brute force your way through catching Beldum or even Metang. It might take several hundred Ultra Balls, but it has to stay in the ball at some point.

That's all we have on how to catch Beldum in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Now that you've added that strong Pokémon to your team, how about learning how to catch Larvitar, another powerful mon?
