Tapu Bulu Pokémon GO Raid Guide: Weakness & Counters

Get your Raid team prepared.

Tapu Bulu is the latest Tapu to enter Pokémon GO raids this season. The seventh generation Legendary will be in raids from April 12 until April 25.

As well as returning to raids, Tapu Bulu will have a new exclusive Charged Attack. Any existing Tapu Bulu you have will only be able to learn this move via Elite TM.

The move is "Natures Madness." It's a Fairy-type move that hits hard, which will make Tapu Bulu more relevant in the Fairy-type category. It's worth picking up a few Tapu Bulu with this move to add to your Pokémon GO collection.

Initial analysis even indicates that Tapu Bulu might have some play in PvP, now that is has received this new powerful move.

Best Tapu Bulu counters in Pokémon GO:

Tapu Bulu is a Fairy and Grass-type Pokémon. That means Tapu Bulu is weak to Fire, Flying, Ice and Steel-type Pokémon. Additionally, Tapu Bulu is also double weak to Poison-type Pokémon in Pokémon GO.

However, Tapu Bulu does have several resistances, including a double resistance to Dragon-types. With the new powerful Natures Madness Fairy-type Charged Attack, Tapu Bulu could be a great choice to take down Dragon-type Pokémon in the future.

So, what are the best Pokémon that counter Tapu Bulu in Pokémon GO?

Mega Beedrill
Poison Jab & Sludge Bomb
Nihilego
Poison Jab & Sludge Bomb
Mega Gengar
Lick & Sludge Bomb
Roserade
Poison Jab & Sludge Bomb
Revavroom
Poison Jab & Gunk Shot
Mega Y Charizard
Fire Spin & Blast Burn
Overqwil
Poison Jab & Sludge Bomb
Mega Blaziken
Fire Spin & Blast Burn
Toxicroak
Poison Jab & Sludge Bomb
Scoliopede
Poison Jab & Sludge Bomb
Victreebel
Acid & Sludge Bomb
Vileplume
Aciid & Sludge Bomb

Thanks to Tapu Bulu's unusual double weakness to Poison-type Pokémon, some of the best counters for this raid are not Pokémon you've probably sent into battle very often.

A standout sleeper pick is Roserade. As a dual Grass Poison-type Pokémon, Roserade double resists Grass-type attacks. In addition, Roserade is resistant against Fighting-type attacks.

Tapu Bulu only has two Fast Attacks, one Grass and one Fighting. So, using Roserade will mean that you are resistant to both Fast Attacks and two of Tapu Bulu's Charged Attacks. Just make sure your Roserade has Poison-type moves before you send it into battle.

A Pokémon not listed is Mega Rayquaza. That is a very powerful Flying-type Pokémon, but it will struggle if the Tapu Bulu has Fairy-type moves in that Raid. Use with caution!

Mega Evolutions to get you more Tapu Bulu candy in Pokémon GO

Mega Evolutions can help you get more candy and XL candy with every catch. Having a mega level 3 active that boosts candy for Grass or Fairy types will give you an extra 2 candy per catch, as well as a 25% bonus to your XL candy chance.

Here are the Pokémon you can Mega Evolve to get bonus candy and candy XL when fighting Tapu Bulu:

  • Venusaur
  • Groudon
  • Sceptile
  • Gardevoir
  • Altaria
  • Abomasnow
  • Diance

Venusaur, Altaria and Groudon can all use moves that will counter Tapu Bulu. That means you can use them in the Raid for their extra strength, as well as get bonus Candy at the end. Groudon is weak to Grass-type attacks though, so beware.

How many trainers do I need to beat Tapu Bulu in Pokémon GO?

High level Trainers should aim for a group of at least two trainers if they have high level counters and Party Play. However, as most people likely do not have super powerful Poison-type Pokémon, a group of three or four is safer.

Lower level Pokémon GO trainers should have a group of six or seven to tackle this Tapu Bulu Raid easily. Don't forget you can Party Play even with people who aren't on your friends list to take advantage of the damage boost.
