Your Bronze Bow is waiting.
Gems play a large role in RuneScape: Dragonwilds even though you might not know they exist. Gems are a somewhat hidden resource that you can only acquire through one specific method. As it currently stands, though, the Gems appear to be extremely rare and players, including myself, are struggling to even get a single one. Perhaps the Gem players are most frustrated with in RuneScape: Dragonwilds is Opals.
Opals are required to craft the Bronze versions of a Shortbow and Longbow, which are massive upgrades over the Ash Shortbow you gain access to in the early game. However, Opals are not easy to come by, so how do you get them and upgrade your bow?

Best way to get Opals in RuneScape: Dragonwilds
First off, let's go over the method you have to use in order to acquire Opals or any other Gem in Dragonwilds, for that matter.

Gems are only looted by mining boulders, deposits, or ore veins. This means you can mine a stone boulder, Granite Deposit, or ores such as Copper, Tin, Iron, etc. During the mining process, you have to get lucky and hope that a random Gem appears after you mine whatever it is you're mining. There are several Gems in Dragonwilds, such as Sapphire, Red Topaz, Jade, but Opals are what you need to upgrade your bow.
Unfortunately, it doesn't appear like mining a specific type of rock or ore grants you a better chance of earning an Opal specifically. I mined Copper and Tin Ore for hours in Dragonwilds and only managed to get two Jade Gems for my efforts. This was with a Bone Bronze Pickaxe, though.
When I stepped to a Bronze Pickaxe and started to mine Iron Ore and Granite Deposits, I saw my first couple of Opals. Then, after upgrading to an Iron Pickaxe, I was getting even more Opals just by mining basic stone boulders.
While I can't prove anything for sure, my experience seems to indicate that the better pickaxe you use, the higher the chance you have of getting random Gem drops when mining. If you're going for Gems while using basic pickaxes, chances are you won't get too many. However, after you spend some time getting the necessary materials from around the map, it seems likely that your luck will change.

Of course, I still can't offer a concrete way to farm Opals specifically in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. The chances to earn any Gem are still random, even with a strong pickaxe, so the best method to use is to simply mine as much as you can until you get what you're looking for.
Now that you know about Opals, how about you learn how to chop down those pesky Oak Trees that are all around the map?
