The move to free-to-play involved giving existing CS:GO playerbase some cosmetic skins and a prime status that distinguishes them from new players. Thankfully, CS:GO 2 will be completely free-to-play from the get-go and should help get many new players to the game.

Is Counter-Strike 2 free to play?

After weeks of speculation and leaks, Valve finally unveiled details about Counter-Strike 2, the latest edition in the Counter-Strike franchise. Counter-Strike 2 will release in Summer of 2023 and brings significant improvements to the gameplay, smokes, maps as well as graphics. But is it a new game? Or is it an update to the existing title?



Is Counter-Strike 2 a new game?







Counter-Strike 2 is an update to CS:GO and will replace the game in a few months. 



With beta-sign-ups open for Counter-Strike 2, Valve wants you to check your game to see if you have beta access. This means Counter-Strike 2 is going to be an update to the existing game. 



While Valve has not outlined the exact process of transitioning from CS:GO to Counter-Strike 2, they might follow a similar process to Dota 2.



In 2015, Dota 2 Reborn was launched as a separate DLC to the main game. Both games existed side-by-side for a while after which they were merged and only Dota 2 Reborn survived.



When does CS2 release?



Counter-Strike 2 releases in Summer 2023. The game is currently in beta as of March 2023. The game will be in beta testing with players providing valuable feedback to Valve to help them improve the game and remove any bugs. 



It is a free-to-play game and players will not have to buy the game to access it. With improved graphics, variable tick-rates, and new cosmetics, Counter-Strike 2 is going to define the next decade of FPS games.

Is Counter-Strike 2 a new game?

Following the Counter-Strike 2 announcement, one of the most asked questions was whether CS:GO skins would transfer over. Valve has confirmed players will retain all their existing skins as well as loadouts. And CS:GO players are busy buying the AWP Sun in Leo driving up its price in the matter of a few hours.



The Counter-Strike 2 announcement mentioned some existing weapons will be upgraded to high-resolution versions of themselves. And so began the search for item price changes in the Steam community market.



Hours after the announcement, the AWP Sun in Leo has almost tripled in price. Why, You ask? The Sun In Leo, a rather unknown AWP skin has received a colored scope in Counter-Strike 2.



A simple cosmetic change like that has drastically improved its visibility and made the skin look a lot cooler. Previously, the scope part was black and the entire skin did not seem as seamless as it does in the image below.

The announcement videos showed slightly different models for the AWP. And CS:GO players quickly noticed that the AWP Sun in Leo was one of the best-looking AWP skins in the new game.









The weapon has nearly tripled in value over the course of just a few hours. With some weapons receiving enhanced visuals in Counter-Strike 2, the prices of weapons will see massive fluctuations over the next few weeks. 



The AWP Sun in Leo is being sold at nearly $51 on the Steam Market up from nearly $25 previously. How far will it go?

Counter-Strike 2 has been announced and the beta is already live. However, only a handful can access the Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test Beta. But the project will expand to include more and more people with time.



Ultimately, Valve hopes to have one game - Counter-Strike 2 - which will replace CS:GO. The slow onboarding process will ensure Valve devs have ample time to fix any bugs and correct any problems with the new game.



Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test beta users will receive a notification when they open their game. The beta will last till Summer 2023 when Counter-Strike 2 releases. For now, it will only feature Deathmatch and Unranked competitive matchmaking.

Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test Beta: How long does it last and what features are available

Counter-Strike 2 is officially coming! With it, new innovations to how gameplay functions will change the way players play. One of the biggest changes coming in Counter-Strike 2 is to smokes. 






The way smokes will function in the new game has changed massively compared to CS:GO. Valve are calling them "Responsive Smokes", because of the new ways that they interact with their environments. 



Smoke grenades have been vital to CS gameplay for years, with the chance to block off the vision of enemies vital to certain strategies and play calls. It is a tactical cornerstone of the Counter-Strike experience.

Previously, smokes would create a cloud of smoke to obscure vision and it would be the same shape and size every time it was thrown. That is changing. 



New smoke physics for Counter-Strike 2



In CS2, smokes will be made up of volumetric shapes and will respond to other polygonal objects in the map. This means that smokes will interact with boxes, doors, crates and will move around them accordingly. 



All players will now see the exact same smoke too, which wasn't the case previously. The smokes will stay consistent regardless of the positioning of each player on the map.

Smokes will also fill spaces where available. If there is a crevice or a cubby that has a smoke thrown into it, it will fill the first available space to it. 



Smokes will now react to bullets and nades



Smokes will also react to different actions in the game. Bullets, grenades will change the way that a smoke grenade is shaped. A player can shoot through a smoke grenade with any of their guns to cut a hole in the smoke to create new lines of sight. The hole will only be temporary as the smoke closes itself up immediately after.

It looks like CS:GO fans are in for a treat because Valve has just announced a whole new buffet! Their favorite video game is getting a complete rework and launching afresh as Counter-Strike 2!

Counter-Strike 2 will utilize Valve's Source 2 engine to its maximum capacity. The Source 2 engine brings about a noteworthy improvement to all the visual effects in the game. Counter-Strike 2 now looks like it belongs in the same league as its modern-day contemporaries like Valorant and Rainbow Six: Siege. These visual effects aren't just for aesthetic pleasure though. They significantly add to the gameplay experience, as per Valve's demonstration.



Improved Readability from updated graphics in Counter-Strike 2



Counter Strike 2 features overhauled VFX including improvements to the UI, explosions and Bullet Impact.



While the improved visuals make for an aesthetically prettier game that's easier on the eye, they also make for a better gameplay experience. According to the website, Counter-Strike 2's innovations in visuals have been implemented with readability in mind. Players will now see bullet impact and blood spatter from greater distances, with improved clarity. The blood spatter also changes based on impact direction. These updates to visual quality allow the player to read the game better and receive more accurate information.

Counter-Strike Source 2 dropped during an ongoing CS:GO tournament. As some of the world’s best teams battled it out on stage at the ESL Pro League Season 17, the rest of the community was busy reading up and watching videos about Counter-Strike 2. When S1mple went to meet the talent after his team’s 2-0 victory over Outsiders, he was in for a pleasant surprise.



After NAVI eliminated Outsiders 2-0 in the ESL Pro League Season 17 playoffs, an ecstatic s1mple joined the talent for a post-match chat. Little did he know no one wanted to talk about the game. When they mentioned Counter-Strike 2, s1mple’s expressions were initially of disbelief and later surprise and awe.

The biggest change in Counter-Strike 2, seems to be the changes to smoke. With responsive smokes, Counter-Strike esports will dramatically change in meta and how players approach the game.



A s1mple ‘What the H***’ by the NAVI player was more than sufficient to highlight his surprise.



Smoke grenades in Counter-Strike 2 are now responsive to the environment. Not only do they bloom outwards and will fill various nooks and crannies, but they are also dispellable by bullets and grenades for a short while.

Even after showing him official tweets and the video, s1mple still does not believe Spunj. His reaction to seeing the smoke dissipate when a grenade is used was just ‘Wow’
