Fortnite x The Last of Us collab NOT planned, says Naughty Dog

Recent Fortnite rumors indicated Epic Games and Naughty Dog were working on a The Last of Us collab. The developer says these are false.

Fortnite's Gaming Legends Series has become a robust offering of characters over the last few years. Interestingly, Epic Games wagered deals with various publishers and developers to bring video game icons into Fortnite Battle Royale. Some names on the list include Master Chief, Kratos and even Street Fighter characters Ryu and Chun-Li. Recently, rumors surfaced regarding a potential Fortnite collaboration with The Last of Us.

A Naughty Dog-developed game, The Last of Us, is a 2013 post-apocalyptic adventure that secured nearly perfect critic scores. Furthermore, the title brought home numerous Game of the Year awards. Considering Epic Games has worked with Naughty Dog in the past, it stands to reason that a Fortnite x The Last of Us would come to fruition.

XboxEra Podcast predicts The Last of Us in Fortnite

A tweet from iFireMonkey pointed out a comment on a recent edition of the XboxEra Podcast. During the episode, co-host Nick Shpeshal confidently stated this collaboration would occur. While the details are murky, the connection makes perfect sense.

As iFireMonkey points out, Naughty Dog plans to release a The Last of Us remake this fall. As a result, this fact, coupled with the recent addition of Fortnite x Uncharted — another Naughty Dog title — lends credibility to this rumor. It's also worth noting that a tv show adaptation of The Last of Us is currently in development.

Naughty Dog denies the rumor

In response to a tweet by Fortnite leaker ShiinaBR, Naughty Dog Co-President Neil Druckmann addressed the story, calling it false. "Love me some Fortnite… but there are no plans for this. False rumor," he wrote. Unfortunately, that seems to end the rapid Fortnite x The Last of Us hype train.

Regardless, there's an obvious incentive from Druckmann's perspective to discredit the leak. Doing so would ultimately create more of a surprising element ahead of its release. However, there is no reason to believe Fortnite x The Last of Us is in the works based on Druckmann's comment.

We'll have to keep a closer eye on the situation as it develops.
