Roblox’s ban follows a crackdown on some social media platforms including Instagram and TikTok.

On August 7, Turkey banned Roblox accusing it of causing abuse of children. The decision left millions of Turkish users unable to access their favorite games on the platform. Roblox has released a statement saying they are working with local authorities to ensure the platform comes back online as soon as possible.

Turkey bans Roblox

Through a social media post, the Turkish Justice Minister Yılmaz TUNÇ outlined the reasons for the Roblox ban. The ban was handed out due to concerns over content that could lead to abuse of children.

Access to the game platform named Roblox and its links in the application markets has been blocked by the Adana 6th Criminal Court of Peace within the scope of the issues specified in the "Law on Regulation of Publications Made in the Internet Environment and Combating Crimes Committed by Means of Such Publications" within the scope of the investigation carried out by the Adana Chief Public Prosecutor's Office due to the content that could lead to the exploitation of children.

The statement did not reveal additional details. However, Roblox has already released a statement saying they are working with the authorities to fix this issue.

Everyone who thinks about the future of our country and our nation and is in a position of responsibility should approach such situations targeting our children with sensitivity and stay away from populist and irresponsible rhetoric.
Attempts to undermine our social structure, abuse of children, encouragement of violence, and activities that will negatively affect the development of our children, each of whom is a precious gift, will never be allowed.

Roblox issued a statement today about the Turkey ban and reaffirms its commitment to be vigilant and compliant with local laws.

On Aug 7, we learned that Roblox was blocked in Türkiye, and we are currently working with local authorities with the goal of resolving it. We are mindful that millions of people use our platform in Türkiye every day, including a vibrant community of developers whose businesses are built on Roblox. We’re committed to doing everything we can to keep our community safe, and we share global policymakers’ commitment to protecting children. Roblox said in a statement. “We work tirelessly to be vigilant against attempts to circumvent our safety systems. We regularly meet with policymakers to engage in important dialogues about issues impacting young people, and look forward to this discussion in Türkiye with the important goal of getting Roblox users online again as soon as possible.”

Other Social Media Platfomrms Under investigation

Besides Roblox, Turkey has also initiated some action against other social media platforms including Instagram. This announcement comes a week after Turkey banned Instagram in the country for preventing posting condolence messages over the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh as per Fortune.

What is Roblox?

Roblox is a virtual universe that allows its users to create games and share them with friends and the community. Players can try out new games on a regular basis, chat with other members, as well as earn and spend virtual money.

Officially, games on Roblox go by the name ‘experiences. Roblox is free to play, however, each experience might have in-experience purchases. The platform takes a cut, around 28% from every purchase on the platform. There have been massive hits in terms of experiences in Roblox, with users creating wildly popular games. Roblox first launched in 2006 and over 50 million users play it every day. The sheer scale of Roblox dwarfs some extremely popular apps even though the demographic is mostly small kids.
