Tomb Raider franchise changing to help escape colonial past

Lara Croft is creating a more noble path for herself.

The popular British explorer and adventurer, Lara Croft, is getting a revamp. No, not on looks, but on how she defines herself within the world of exploration. To help escape her colonial past, Evil Hat Productions and Crystal Dynamics plan to give her character a brand new light and motivation.

Instead of being a tomb raider, Lara Croft will now be defined as a "seeker of truth."

Lara Croft to escape colonial past in new Tomb Raider series

The new tabletop game, "Tomb Raider: Shadows of Truth," will be the first look we get at this revamped Lara Croft. Yes, she will still be as awesome as ever, but with a different motive behind her searches.

So what exactly is the Croft trying to escape? Well, when looking at the phrase tomb raider, it essentially hints at searching tombs and taking whatever artifacts are found. Not only is this disrespectful to whatever culture hid those artifacts, but it also creates the notion that finders keepers is acceptable within the world of history.

The more recent Tomb Raider trilogy did take a step in the right direction, as the majority of those games followed her through an epic adventure as she strode to uncover a bunch of mysteries.

The original games though, were a lot more about acquiring different items from tombs.

"Raiding, as depicted in the original Tomb Raider games and stories, involves going to ancient tombs and historical sites of different civilizations and acquiring artifacts," said the official Tomb Raider: Shadows of Truth rulebook. It operates on the assumption of 'finders keepers' that grants raiders with the means and the drive to claim ownership of artifacts, regardless of whether they have any historical or cultural claim to the treasure."

Learning from history should help humans strive to not repeat the mistakes of the past. Lara Croft is doing just that, as she prepares to be a better explorer for all of us.

The history of Tomb Raider

The first Tomb Raider game was released back in 1996, giving gamers a new type of explorative title. Since then, there have been 12 main titles with multiple spin-offs across multiple gaming platforms.

These titles were created to help give gamers a game that not only involved action but mystery and more. With multiple movies made, following tabletop games and more, Lara Croft has become one of the most popular characters in all of gaming.

I mean, she even has multiple different skins in Fortnite.

Her newest trilogy, though, has been by far the best within the Tomb Raider series. With the new Shadows of Truth tabletop game coming out, many fans are excited to see where the future of Lara Croft goes.
