Is Aurora your next one-trick champion?

League of Legends has had occasional leaks in its long tenure. Whether its skins, champions, game modes, or other content, LoL has always been plagued with unofficially released content. This time, however, League of Legends developers themselves teased the next champion: Aurora. Check out the Aurora leak with the assets and more here.

We first heard of a mid-range mage in the Season 2024 Look Ahead video that LoL devs posted earlier this year. A few months later, in-game assets featuring a previously unseen female character popped up in the latest LoL Public Beta Environment (PBE) build.

In the Season 2024 Look Ahead Dev Video uploaded on January 4, 2024, they mentioned a "mid-range-mage solo-laner." Alongside this information was an image of her lab and her place in the Champion roadmap. This confirms that she is slated to be released after Smolder. If this remains unchanged, she will be Champion #168.

The video did not reveal her name. Recently, dataminers found two new assets uploaded to the League of Legends PBE client. Codenamed "Aurora" in the game files, they and the community were convinced that this might be League's newest mage.

It also helps that her glasses have a colorful reflection, imitating that of an aurora borealis. Other users pointed out the timing of this "reveal," given the recent aurora sighting in North America earlier this month.

The dev video also revealed that Aurora has been in development for a while. "The last time we tried their development, [it] took a bit of a detour and we ended up with Sylas," said Sope "Sopebox" May, Champions Team Production Lead.

Who is Aurora in League of Legends?

As for her place in the League universe, Aurora is said to have vastayan blood. Think Sett, Xayah, and Rakan, but her "animal" is meant to be a rabbit.

The leaked assets did not have any rabbit-like or even vastayan features, leading many to question this part of her lore. She also seems to be from the Freljord (similar to Braum, Ashe, Sejuani) or an adventurer exploring Freljord, given her thick, woolly hood.

Other icons that were in the same update match up with this information too. A cute Ornn icon as well as an icy creature called a "Hestrelk" are both Freljordian.

The earliest Aurora can go live is June 12, 2024 with League of Legends patch 14.12. She can be revealed as early as May 29, 2024.
