Marathon is making waves this week, as Bungie’s latest title is revealed with alpha testing on the cards and a release date confirmed.
Marathon's reveal stream gave us details on the game's release date and upcoming alpha test. Bungie’s reboot of the original game, released in 1994 with the same name, takes things in a new direction. While the original Marathon was almost a prequel to the Destiny series, the new version is set to be a multiplayer extraction shooter. Similar to Escape from Tarkov or Call of Duty’s DMZ, Marathon will feature player versus player (PvP) at its core.
On April 12, a reveal stream was seen for the new title. While testing for the game has already been underway behind closed doors, Bungie confirmed that players would now be able to participate.

Marathon’s alpha and release date
Much of the news surrounding Marathon has been cryptic. With strange posts via the game’s social media accounts and clues dropped at random, many are excited to see just what Bungie has in store.
In a reveal stream conducted on April 12, Bungie gave everyone a taste of what is to come for Marathon. Set to release on September 23, 2025, Marathon looks to take on the extraction shooter genre. While this date strangely coincides with the release of Borderlands 4, Marathon has fans of the genre ready for a new challenge.
Also confirmed during the stream was an alpha test period for the game. This will allow players to get their hands on the title before it drops later this year. While the hype is high for Marathon, alpha tests could show if the game will land strongly in the extraction shooter market.
Those wanting to get into the alpha test will need to head to the Marathon official Discord server, where they can sign up for the alpha. The alpha period begins on April 23 and the only way to gain access is via the Discord or through giveaways. However, it seems that the Marathon alpha will only be open to North America, with no European servers on release. This could change later in the alpha, but for now, this is the case.

We will have more information on Marathon once the alpha kicks off, and we get to see more of what the game has in store. For now, everyone is excited to get a hands-on experience with the upcoming title.
