MPL Indonesia hosted the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League Season 10 without the permission of PBESI.
The Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League has admitted to having hosted its 10th season without the permission of Pengurus Besar Esports Indonesia (PBESI), an Indonesian esports governing body. This was confirmed when MPL Indonesia released a statement on Twitter on Jan. 29, apologizing to PBESI, participants, and the public for their mistake.
MPL Indonesia Season 10 ran between August and October 2022, reportedly without the approval or sanction of the PBESI. The Mobile Legends Professional League was first started in 2018, two years after the release of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB). Now, ahead of Season 11, MLP Indonesia apologized for breaching PBESI rules.
Who is Pengurus Besar Esports Indonesia (PBESI)?
The PBESI are the official governing body of esports in Indonesia, sanctioned by the government. It was created in hopes that the esports ecosystem will receive attention and become more advanced.
PBESI will be headed by General Pol. Prof. Dr Budi Gunawan from 2020 until 2024. As per its mission statement, it is a platform for all esports teams, players, and publishers to make the industry more known. In its creation, the organisation will reportedly help build esports from the district level.
What will happen to MPL?
When PBESI rules are broken, there are policies in place to handle situations such as this. According to the rulebook laid out by the PBESI, there are numerous consequences that may be handed down to the league.
Some violations of the regulations include in-game violations and out-of-match offenses. In-game infractions include cheating programs or even the violation of the rules of the Esports League, Tournament Esports and multi-sport events.
Off-match violations, which are the ones that MPL seemingly breached, include misusing the name PBESI, violations by professional esports teams, (Breach of employment contract, movement of players that do not fulfill obligations to PBESI) and violations by game publishers.
Some of the consequences that may be handed out by PBESI may depend on the severity, including light and severe reprimands, removal as a registered vendor, and possibly a fine. There's no guaranteed consequences but these are possible sanctions.
At the end of their statement, MPL Indonesia proclaimed PBESI as the only Indonesian Esports Parent Organisation confirmed by the Government of Indonesia, stating that they will comply with the terms and conditions laid out by the organisation moving forward.
