Overwatch Credits, lower skin prices coming Overwatch 2 Season 3

High skin prices got you down? Overwatch Credits are making a return in Season 3 of Overwatch 2, along with a chance to earn some coins.

With the end of its current season next week, Blizzard's plans for Overwatch 2 Season 3 appear to be taking shape. Part of that plan is a restructuring of legacy skins and currency according to a developer blog released today.

In addition to the return of Overwatch Credits, players will also be able to earn the formerly-defunct currency. And in a welcome change, all Epic and Legendary Overwatch 1 skins--including seasonal special skins--will be purchasable with either Coins or Credits.

Overwatch Credits and new skin prices

The player reaction to skin costs was immediate and violent upon the release of Overwatch 2. It felt like a punishment that old skins from the game's previous iteration cost the same as new ones. Blizzard was listening and has a plan for Season 3 to rectify the situation.

In Season 3, we’re bringing back Overwatch Credits, which had been previously shown as Legacy Credits and been unearnable in Overwatch 2. Now, all players can earn up to 1500 credits as free rewards and another 500 credits as premium rewards spread throughout Season 3 Battle Pass. We are also adding more uses for your Credits so you can choose from many potential rewards.

Specifically, we are making two related updates to our Hero Gallery. First, nearly all the epic and legendary-tier skins prior to Overwatch 2 launch will always be available in the hero gallery for purchase with either Overwatch Coins or Credits. This includes skins from the seasonal event modes, so now you can finally pick up Witch Mercy, Surf 'N' Splash Torbjörn, or Snowman Wrecking Ball any time of the year without waiting for the event to roll around! Second, we’re lowering the standard price of these legendary skins to 1500 Coins or Credits.

The plan for Season 3

The ability to earn Overwatch Credits is a smart and welcome sight. Even if the amount essentially means you'll only be able to buy one legendary per season. The post also addresses the lackluster nature of its recent seasonal events if you're a veteran Overwatch player. Which, yeah: As someone that has played since the game's beta, I don't know if I really need to do Junkenstein's Revenge ever again.

However, Blizzard notes that "In Season 3, one of our new events will offer players an all-new legendary skin. And starting in Season 4, our goal is to offer new items as rewards for most of our big events."

Well, okay then.

Season 3 of Overwatch 2 will also feature balances changes, with one already mentioned for Ramattra. Fans of his Annihilation Ultimate will be sad to know that it's going to get a cap of 20 seconds in the next season. "We want Ramattra to feel imposing and intimidating but not feel hopeless to fight against," says Blizzard.

The Season 3 update is already shaping up to be a big deal. Look for the next season to start soon.
