G2 Esports is a strong CS2 team alright, but their opponents are currently the top menace on the scene. The last time they played was at IEM Chengdu 2025, and FURIA defeated G2 with a 2:0, including a 13:5 on Train.
One of these teams could secure a quarterfinal spot on their second tournament day. Both G2 Esports and FURIA joined the StarLadder Budapest Major 2025 with Stage 3. Both have won two best-of-one rounds. The Playoffs ticket qs only one, and it went to the winners of this advancement match.

It was a best-of-three (Bo3) advancement match. The winners advanced to the Playoffs of the CS2 Budapest Major. The losers will have two more chances.
- FURIA defeated G2, dominating most of the time. They played wonderfully on Inferno and the first half of Overpass. G2 had a glimpse of hope closer to the end, but risky economic decisions and personal skills carried FURIA to the quarterfinals.
“[In the second half on Overpass], we were just whiffing. We were in position, and we did good reads. [...] I started to worry a little, as every time we play these guys: Overpass, and we go to overtime. And today, I was thinking to myself, “not again, this can’t be the script.” The CT side is the strongest side on the map, but you know how the economy can get if you lose the pistols, and then they start getting more and more money. [...] I’m glad we won.
[On sickness among the players] - these people, they need to relax, don’t even touch the PC. They need everything in order for them to get better. It’s been intense, and even today, we have a very late game. Normally, we don’t have such late games: people get tired and lose focus. This 3:0 is a blessing for us, as we can rest, recover, and go for the Playoffs.”
Inferno
FURIA built a nice advantage early, even if their rising star, Danil "molodoy" Golubenko, was somewhat late to the party: he misshot unusually a lot in the beginning.
G2 attacked Banana stubbornly, and they couldn’t win control over the area. A couple of rounds they won by planting on B happened thanks to rotation through CT Spawn, when, say, Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo held the bombsite alone and was taken down.
The dread of Banana turned into a missed round: G2 did not attack B when there was only molodoy with the Desert Eagle.
Even when FURIA were losing rounds, they still pressured G2. In Round 11, FalleN came from the back of the entire G2 on Banana: but FURIA were only with pistols.
Kaike "KSCERATO" Cerato stepped up for his team in Round 12 — great finishing kills on A.
After the side switch, FURIA’s dominance was even more pronounced. Still, there were some shaky moments. In Round 14, Mareks "YEKINDAR" Gaļinskis saved his team when G2 were on force buy: two kills on A to deny defusal attempt.
At the end, FURIA got somewhat cocky. In a potentially final round, they did not clear the backside of B, so Matúš "matys" Šimko killed two opponents during planting. FURIA won the match in the next round, despite another amazing play by matys.
Overpass
The first half of Overpass was absolutely great for FURIA. molodoy was finding open kills. KSCERATO was such a threat with his rifle.
G2 had a chance to strike back in Round 3, with 4K by HeavyGod on the Five-SeveN. Still, molodoy clutched after planting in smoke and winning a 1v2 duel.
FURIA players were creative in their approaches: like super patient offense in Round 6 with planting in the last moments. Even when G2 had good reads and a nice promise, the rounds fell apart for them.
Alvaro "SunPayus" Garcia stepped up with multiple AWP kills in Rounds 8 and 9 to secure something in the match score.
After the side switch, G2 Esports went for quick offense in the T side, and it worked perfectly. G2 gave FURIA the hardest period in the entire Stage of the Budapest Major.
FURIA lost the pistols, and their economy struggled a lot. In the first gun round, they still lost, and it looked like G2 could be back in the competition.
molodoy made the task much easier with 3K, when the team scratched money for the AWP. KSCERATO won a crucial 1v1 in the next round.
Winning with low buys and risking with force buy was the mood for FURIA in the last rounds. It worked well!
FURIA and G2 on flawless runs at the Budapest Major. One to be interrupted
To be crystal clear, only one match was potentially challenging for G2 and FURIA at the Counter-Strike 2 Budapest Major. FURIA faced NAVI in Round 1 — well, the potential challenge turned out to be stomping dominance for FURIA. They lost no rounds in the first half and won that match with a 13:2 on Nuke.
All the other opponents have an estimated lower level.
FURIA on a mission
- FURIA defeated Imperial in Round 2. They had an excellent first half again, 11:1, so FURIA advanced to this match with a 13:5 on Dust II.
Ahead of the Major, FURIA won a few tournaments, including Intel Extreme Masters Chengdu 2025 and BLAST Rivals Fall 2025 in Hong Kong.
G2 back in form?
G2 Esports had a chance for similar dominance in their Round 1 match.
- In the first half on Mirage, G2 was at an 11:1 lead against Passion UA. The opponents made the gap smaller at the end, 13:7.
- paiN Gaming could be named a bigger danger, as this team reached the top 4 at the Austin Major. However, their decision to skip tournaments for preserving VRS points affected paiN’s competitive form. G2 won with a 13:8 on Dust II, having a nice 9:3 lead in the first half.
This season, G2 won BLAST Open Fall 2025 in London. It was rather a spike in overall shaky tournament performance. They were in the top 11 at the EPL Season 22, eliminated by 3DMAX in the final Swiss Stage round. On a positive note, G2 Esports defeated FURIA back then, with a 2:0.
The two remaining Swiss rounds of Stage 3 at the Budapest Major 2025 happen over the weekend, Dec. 6 and Dec. 7. After a small break, the best CS2 esports teams of this season play the biggest matches: the Playoffs start on Dec. 11.
