With it all on the line against BLG as the LCK champions, we chatted with Delight about making his mark on the international stage.

In an age-old matchup between LCK and LPL, Gen G hit the Rift to face the second seed of the LPL, Bilibili Gaming, who had been dubbed as a potential winner of the tournament. Despite their best efforts, BLG proved too much for the first seed of the LCK, and Gen G finished fourth at MSI 2023. With their run at MSI over, we caught up with Gen G's Support, Yoo "Delight" Hwan-joong, to ask about his time at MSI 2023, being a pro player, and facing BLG.

Facing the LPL second seed

BLG have been very dominant throughout MSI leading up to your series versus them, and they were also very dominant in your series, were you expecting this level of dominance and aggression from them as you went into your series?

Delight: "To be honest, I didn’t expect them to be this aggressive and powerful so early on but we did know that everyone in the tournament is really talented and strong but BLG was a cut above and we now know we need to work harder to compete more long term."

Game two was looking very good for you, what went wrong from your perspective for the game to slip through your fingers?

Delight: "From my perspective at least, we had the same problem and similar scenarios in both game one and game two, wherein we were struggling to have a good fight around objectives."

In game three it looked really bad for you and likely they were going to finish the game quickly once they secured the Baron, how did you feel watching them do this?

Delight: "We just kept doing our best to communicate and find cracks in their game play that we could use to our advantage rather than focusing on what had already been taken/fallen apart, and that was our strategy to turn the tables on BLG in the matchup."

Reaching the international stage

This is your first time on the international stage, so how does it feel to finally be here?

Delight: "Not everyone gets to reach the international stage and play tournaments against other international teams so for me I was really happy we qualified and were able to make it this far. Being here has helped me become more experienced and grow as a player so that I know what I need to fix ahead of the summer season in the LCK."

You’ve been with Gen G for a relatively short period of time, what do you think you bring to this roster?

Delight: "I'm not really sure yet, I feel like I still need to work at it more to figure out the exact details."

You played on the academy of Gen G at the start of your career, how do you feel having made it to the main roster?

Delight: "Ever since I began my journey, I always dreamt about being on the main roster, and then I was able to first do that on BRION and Blade and now I’ve moved to Gen G and to look back at it, I think I've made quite a lot of progress, especially in a short time."

Gen G Delight on becoming the pro he is today

You have been a pro player from a very young age, how did your family respond to you wanting to become a pro player?

Delight: "I started my journey to becoming a pro player when I was in the eleventh grade, but I first wanted to become a pro in eighth grade but my parents told me no, and I couldn’t go for training and academy programs so young and to stay in school and study and become a pro player after. So once I finished school about three years later that is when I went onto academy teams and started my journey."

What does it mean to you to be a pro player?

Delight: I wanted to become a pro because I love the game and it was always my dream, as I got into being a pro I realized it's harder than it looks. I'm trying to do the best I can and offer the best version of my support play to the team I'm with."

If you were an animal, what animal would you be and why?

Delight: "I’d be a guinea pig – no major reason other than that someone once told me that is the animal I most resemble"
