The newest Call of Duty titles shares a name with Call of Duty’s most known game. But is it a remake or its own story? Find out here!

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II (MWII) is the 19th game in the ever-expanding Call of Duty franchise. Ranking among the top storylines of Call of Duty is the Modern Warfare series. The games that took Call of Duty to the next level. So when Call of Duty MWII was announced, the community was enthralled to revisit the game that kicked the franchise into high gear. But MWII isn't a remake. Rather, it's a prequel to the events of Call of Duty's most known title.

MWII and its place in the Call of Duty timeline

Although Call of Duty MWII shares the same name as the iconic previous title, the games are not the same. The original, iconic title that covers the Makarov storyline is Modern Warfare 2 (MW2), with the specific number "2" in its name. While on the other hand, the 2022 game is MWII II, with roman numerals. Both games feature the same cast of iconic and playable characters, but the two games are different in terms of story. So, the 2022's MWII is not a remake of 2009's MW2.

MWII versus MW2 storyline

In terms of the storyline, MWII is a prequel to the famous title of MW2. Unfortunately, there are a couple small loopholes between the games. Regardless, the events and story that are in MWII directly set up the story of Makarov in MW2. The ending of MWII has Soap, Pierce, Ghost and the remaining members of Task Force 141 preparing for their next target, who is Makarov as Colonel Shepard goes into hiding.

So, the answer is no. Despite the names of the games being almost identical, 2022's Call of Duty MWII is not a remake of the classic MW2. The 2022 release is a prequel, meaning the events of the game happen before 2009's MW2 and set up the story for that game.
