Call of Duty League nominated for Sports Emmy Award

The CDL has been nominated for a Sports Emmy Award along with League of Legends Worlds and The International 11.

The Call of Duty League has been nominated for a Sports Emmy.

The CDL is continuing to grow in the esports industry and mainstream media is taking notice. The 44th annual Sports Emmy Awards announced the 2022 Call of Duty League Championship Finals match between Los Angeles Thieves and Atlanta FaZe for its Outstanding Esports Championship Coverage category.

The Call of Duty Champs grand final match had 275,244 peak viewers and the commentary had been highly respected in the esports world. The epic match proved the popularity of competitive Call of Duty and earned it a nomination at the Sports Emmy Awards.

The other contenders in that category are:

This is currently the only esports category at the Sports Emmy Awards. But seeing a lot of top esports moments in the lineup — including VCT Champions and League of Legends Worlds — is definitely a step in the right direction. The show started including esports in 2019, nominating Rocket League, Apex Legends, Fortnite, and Fifa at that time — all losing to League of Legends.

This year is actually the second time that Call of Duty has been nominated. Last year, the 2020 Champs Finals match between Dallas Empire and Atlanta FaZe was nominated but League of Legends Worlds Finals won. In the past, Overwatch League was also nominated, but it hasn't been on the list since 2021.

The Sports Emmy Awards ceremony is taking place on May 22. It will feature 47 categories including the Esports Championship Coverage category. Check out all all the information here.
