A new Call of Duty game is coming in 2023, according to Bloomberg. This wasn’t part of the original plan, but we’ll take it.

A new Call of Duty game is reportedly coming later this year.

A report from Bloomberg has revealed that Activision has a Call of Duty game planned for 2023. This is interesting news to the Call of Duty community, since developers have not been too straightforward about what's to come for the series, stating that "new premium content" was coming back in 2022. That sounds more like DLC than a new game.

Then in November of last year, a report surfaced that said Activision was working on "large-scale paid DLC" for Modern Warfare 2. So again, it sounded like developers were planning on DLC for 2023, not a full game. So what's going on?

Is there a new Call of Duty in 2023?

Recent reports say yes.

According to Bloomberg's report, developers initially were planning to release a paid expansion for Modern Warfare 2, but that plan has changed. Developers are now working on an entirely new game that will be sold separately from Modern Warfare 2. But it will also be considered an expansion of Modern Warfare 2.

Huh?

So, according to Bloomberg, this year's Call of Duty release will be a standalone, full-price game. It just happens to be an "extension" of MW2 content-wise — that's because it started as a huge DLC release for MW2 with content for both single and multiplayer.

What content is in the new Call of Duty game?

Okay, so not much is known about the upcoming Call of Duty game. But it will have some content from Modern Warfare 2, carrying over similar elements. This makes it sound like the 2023 Call of Duty game will be in the same timeframe and feature the same cast of characters as Modern Warfare 2. It's possible it will continue the storyline where it left off.

According to the report, developers previously considered a "brand new version for Call of Duty" that would "switch between Modern Warfare and Black Ops games." But this is currently on hold due to the Microsoft acquisition, so it's currently unclear if this is what the 2023 game will be or not.

For now, it's all a mystery. But it will be a full game, not DLC.

When is the 2023 Call of Duty coming out?

The date of the new game is currently unknown. Shocker. We can't help you much there yet but we will be on the lookout for more information.

Who is developing the new Call of Duty?

Bloomberg has revealed that Sledgehammer Games will be developing the new Call of Duty title. The same studio developed Call of Duty: Vanguard, one of the worst-received and under-sold title in the history of Call of Duty. Hopefully the 2023 Call of Duty will be a bit more promising since it's a continuation of Modern Warfare, a more popular series.
