A full list of every expansion, season, and episode that makes up Destiny 2 from start to now!
The world and story of Destiny spans over a decade now, with Destiny 2 arriving in 2017. From the get-go the game caught the attention of many who missed out on the prequel due to trepidation or a lack of a console (no PC release, remember!). Keeping track of all the Destiny 2 expansions that have been released since isn't easy—the game is almost a decade old now!
Since The Red War's launch, each "year" of Destiny 2 was classed as an "expansion" with its own name and theme, and it generally took place in a location (new or old). Each expansion was then split into smaller "seasons" with their own story (linking back to the expansion's main story in some way).
The expansions also included new gear to chase and stories to tell. Here's a look at each expansion and season in Destiny 2's history as we gear up for 2025's Frontiers release!
Every Destiny 2 season and episode, from start to now
The Red War

- Released: September 2017
Back to where it all began, at least for the game's sequel. The Cabal, led by Dominus Ghaul, invaded The Last City and chained the Traveler. Ghaul hopes to imprison the Traveler and force it to give him the power of the Light. You find a way back, and after breaking out the Vanguard, fight back and defeat Ghaul, releasing the Traveler from its bonds.
In reality, Destiny 2's release was received rather poorly. There was little to do in the endgame apart from the Leviathan raid (one of the fondest-remembered raids in the game), and most weapons felt under-tuned and useless.
Curse of Osiris

- Released: December 2017
Curse of Osiris had us travel to Mercury to respond to a call for help from Osiris and his Ghost, Sagira. We delved into the Infinite Forest and freed Osiris, defeating Panoptes and saving the universe from the Vex takeover.
If The Red War was received poorly, then Curse of Osiris was dead on arrival. Again, limited endgame content, a very short story campaign, and dissatisfaction with the gunplay had many fearing the worst for Destiny 2.
Warmind

- Released: May 2018
Ana Bray called for backup on Mars, believing she had found the last remnants of the almighty A.I. Rasputin. We uncovered much more, including Xol — a Hive worm god — but we put him out to pastures with ease.
Apart from a very easy battle against Xol, Bungie scored points with the player base who believed Destiny was making a turn for the better after launch. They'd be proven right with what came next.
Forsaken

- Released: September 2018
- Seasons:
- The Outlaw
- The Forge
- The Drifter
- Opulence
Forsaken arrived with a bang in 2018. Two new destinations in the Tangled Shore and the Dreaming City, a massive raid in Last Wish, and a captivating campaign that included the death of the beloved Cayde-6.
The expansion hit all the right notes with the Destiny community, with many still calling Forsaken the best post-launch content in the game's history today. Forsaken also kicked off Bungie's new seasonal model, with the year's content split into four fairly equal-length content packs.
Of these first bunch, Season of the Forge saw weapons reworked in a big way, while Season of Opulence introduced group activities that built upon Warmind's Escalation Protocol.
Shadowkeep

- Released: October 2019
- Seasons:
- Undying
- Dawn
- The Worthy
- Arrivals
Shadowkeep saw guardians return to the Moon for the first time since the prequel. Beneath the surface of Luna, with Eris Morn's help, we uncovered the dark Pyramid at its core and began to uncover the secrets of darkness.
It was always going to be tough to follow up Forsaken but Shadowkeep was serviceable. Season of the Undying included the Vex Offensive activity and the Garden of Salvation Raid; Season of Dawn had the infamous Corridors of Time community event and the beloved Sundial activity; Season of the Worthy incorporated a Fortnite-like group event witnessed by players in-game, and Season of Arrivals wrapped up the first big act of the story with the arrival of the darkness fleet, led by The Witness.
Trials of Osiris (previously Trials of the Nine) also made a comeback for PvP fans.

Beyond Light

- Released: November 2020
- Seasons:
- The Hunt
- The Chosen
- The Splicer
- The Lost
Beyond Light changed the game in a big way, with guardians given access to the first Darkness subclass, Stasis. We arrived on Europa and uncovered the Bray facility and, with the Exo Stranger Elsie Bray's help, put a stop to Xivu Arath's plans.
The new expansion content was well-received by many, but as the year went on, there was growing sentiment and boredom of the seasonal model. The arrival of the H.E.L.M, new companions in the Crow and Empress Caiatl, and the epic 30th anniversary event (including the return of the fabled Gjallarhorn) didn't exactly sate the appetite of some who felt the introduction of the Destiny Content Vault (DCV) and loss of old content was a detriment.
The Witch Queen

- Released: February 2022
- Seasons:
- The Risen
- The Haunted
- Plunder
- The Seraph
The spark came in the form of The Witch Queen, which brought big baddie Savathun into the limelight. Hinted as an agent of Darkness for a long time, we tracked her down and discovered she had died — and was reborn through the power of the Light.
The major update that arrived with Season of the Risen was Void 3.0, the first big rework update for the original subclasses. Arc and Solar's reworks came this year, bringing the subclasses in line with Stasis and Void. We also got Vow of the Disciple, one of Destiny's best raids released to date.
The Leviathan returned in Season of the Haunted, this time as an explorable destination, while Season of the Seraph saw the combined forces of the Light take on Xivu Arath and Eramis. Again, players were still frustrated at Bungie's decision to use the DCV to "vault" old, now inaccessible content.
Lightfall

- Released: February 2023
- Seasons:
- Defiance
- The Deep
- The Witch
- The Wish
- Into The Light
Hype grew when the trailer for the Lightfall expansion arrived in August 2022. We got a look at The Witness and her new enemies, as well as a preview of Neomuna — a neon-lit city on Neptune.
That's where the good news ended for Lightfall's launch, however. Many called Neomuna wasted potential, with little below the surface past landing in the city for the first time or the discovery of Strand. Players were also left unhappy with the ending of the main campaign; sure, the battle against Acolyte Calus was epic, but little was explained about The Veil.
This was the final year of the seasonal model, with Season of the Wish wrapping up preparations for an all-out assault on Destiny 2's final boss, The Witness. With The Final Shape delayed to June 2024, Bungie filled the gap with a mini-season in Into The Light.
The Final Shape

- Released: June 2024
- Seasons:
- Episode: Echoes
- Episode: Revenant
- Episode: Heresy
The delay to The Final Shape launching, which included mass Bungie layoffs and a bit of downtime only just covered by Into The Light, took quite a bit of shine off of the grand finale to the Light and Darkness saga.
But what a saga-ender it was. Guardians, with allies and former enemies at their sides, took on The Witness in the Excision mission and Salvation's Edge raid. We dove into the Pale Heart of the Traveler — itself a step back in time. New weapons, new armor, and plenty of content saw a record number of players return for the finale.
Bungie revealed its seasonal model replacement, "Episodes," which since have been heavily likened to seasons anyway. Echoes (Vex) and Revenant (Eliksni) saw us deal with the aftermath of the Witness' defeat, while Heresy (Hive and Taken, currently ongoing) sets up for what comes next in Destiny.
Frontiers

- Released: Summer 2025
- Seasons:
- Expansion: Codename Apollo
- Expansion: Codename Behemoth
Bungie has shared a little about the Frontiers expansion, which is next up for Destiny later in 2025. With the Cabal left out of the Episodes, it's rumored we'll be heading to their homeworld of Torobatl to liberate it from the Hive and Darkness takeover.
Leaving the Sol system opens up other opportunities for travel like Riis, the homeworld of the Eliksni, or the desolate moon of Fundament where Oryx, Savathun, and Xivu Arath hailed from as Krill.
Gameplay-wise, Bungie is shifting to a two-part release to the expansion, split six months apart. Bungie plans to release one raid and one dungeon each year and build upon each activity across the two parts. We also know Frontiers will bring about a massive change to armor, with more details expected soon.
Beyond Frontier? Bungie hasn't shared much beyond that just yet, but at this stage, it's full steam ahead for 2025 and 2026 at the very least.
