How to respec skill trees in Borderlands 4

You have a do-over if you need to change around your skill trees in Borderlands 4.

Every class in Borderlands 4 has access to three different skill trees, and you unlock a new point to use in those skill trees after you level up. You can fully mix and match the skills in each tree, but you do have to eventually decide on a single tree in order to make full use of your chosen Action Skill and Augments. Of course, it can be difficult to determine exactly what skill tree you want to prioritize at the start of the game. Fortunately, you have the option to respec all of your spent skills in Borderlands 4 so you can hit a full reset.

Below, we'll show you exactly how to respec your skills in Borderlands 4 and the cost associated with using the feature.

For starters, the term "respec" essentially means to refund all of the skill points you've already spent up to your current point in the game. This returns all of the skill points to you and allows you to re-acquire skills to match the new build you want. Respeccing gives you the chance to try out different builds, as none of the skill points you use are permanently locked in.

If you want to respec skills in Borderlands 4, you won't be able to do it simply by going to the "Skills" menu. Instead, you have to visit a Respec Machine. Respec Machines are located in most of the major hub towns you'll come across during the course of the main story. The first Respec Machine you can find during the story is at the Outbounders HQ, which you visit after setting up your first safehouse with Claptrap.

At the Outbounders HQ, you'll meet Rush and the rest of the Outlanders, who are currently being oppressed by The Timekeeper and others in his Order. Once you're done speaking with Rush, you can look around the small town the Outbounders have set up for themselves. In one of the main buildings in the town, you'll find a Golden Chest, which you can use Golden Keys from SHiFT Codes to open, and a Respec Machine sitting right next to it.

The Respec Machine is in the corner of the room with the Golden Chest, and when you approach it, you'll get a tutorial message on your screen. Approaching the Respec Machine also shows you how much cash it will cost to respec all of your currently spent skills. Every time you use the Respec Machine, you have to pay a cash amount that's relative to the skill points you've already used.

For example, if you're only at level 10 and used 10 skill points, the cash requirement won't be too substantial. However, as you progress and use more skill points, the cash requirement will steadily increase. This means you're better off trying different builds during the early portion of Borderlands 4, as the longer you wait, the more cash it's going to cost.

Once you choose to use the Respec Machine, all of your skill points will be refunded, and you can head into the Skills menu to respend all of them. There's no limit to how many times you can repeat this process in Borderlands 4, so feel free to abuse the Respec Machine as much as you'd like. You can find more Respec Machines as you progress through the story, but the one at Outbounders HQ is always easy to use.
