Find out whether or not the original is needed to understand the sequel.

2025 is starting off hot for new game releases, as February and March are chock-full of high-profile games. One of the more anticipated games from the early slate is Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, a follow-up to one of the most beloved RPGs of all time. While the title does have a "2" in it, some players are wondering if the new game is an actual sequel or something else entirely from the original Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Sometimes, sequels aren't actually sequels and simply add a new number in the game's title to show how many games are in the series. The numbered titles often don't pick up the story from the last game and implement new gameplay mechanics, characters, and locations. Before the release of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, it's worth finding out if the game is a proper sequel and whether or not you need to play the original to understand it.

Yes, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is unequivocally a sequel to the original game that was released in 2018. The sequel picks up directly where the first game left off and includes some returning characters, including the main character, Henry, or "Hal," of Skalitz, as well as similar locations.

While the sequel is picking up where the first game ended, added elements really drive home how much of a sequel the upcoming game is. Not only will you reassume the role of Henry, but you'll also be given all of the skills and abilities he learned in the first game. This includes all of the weapon combos and mechanics as well as points in the various skill trees.

Essentially, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 puts you directly in the shoes of Henry as if the first game never ended.

While the sequel to Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a dream scenario for gamers who played the original, this leaves new players in a strange situation. You might want to experience one of the best RPGs of 2025, but could also be intimated by the sequel taking so much from the first game.

Naturally, to get the most out of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, you'll want to at least know the events that occur in the original. The first game features plenty of historical lore, twists and turns, and ends on a small cliffhanger that will be the focus of the sequel's beginning. Fortunately, there are plenty of resources online that you can use to get yourself up to speed before playing the sequel.

However, you can also hop into Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 without any prior knowledge of the original. The first game featured a massive encyclopedia of knowledge that gave you information on the backstory of the story, every character, and gameplay mechanics. That same feature will return in the sequel, so you can use that to understand what's happening and who the various characters are.

If you go in without any knowledge of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, at the very least you'll still be able to experience a terrific RPG. By catching yourself up on the lore, though, you can truly appreciate how the story unfolds and what the developers have crafted.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 releases on Feb. 4, 2025 and features a few different editions and pre-order bonuses.
