This MOBA is not too friendly to newcomers. It may feel like League of Legends throws players to wild waters to teach them how to play. This approach works generally well (for motivated gamers). League of Legends features more than 160 Champions. These powerful characters battle on the map Summoner’s Rift trying to destroy Nexus, the main structure of the opponent’s base. Sure, it’s the main game mode, and variations are possible, like LoL Arena.

Summoner’s Rift has three lanes that connect the bases of two teams: Top, Mid, and Bottom. More info on them can be found in our League of Legends guide for beginners.

Depending on the lane a Champion fights on and their role in a LoL team, there are five common positions for the players. Not all of them are good for beginners in League of Legends.

Let’s discuss these LoL positions with a focus on how beginner-friendly they are.

A general description of this role would be “fight alone”. In a way, the Top lane is distant from the main team action. Players here can't really hope for a lot of help, even a Jungler and a Mid may or may not come. This applies some extra obligation but also gives a unique feeling of might, internal power.

The Top position in League of Legends is arguably the best for beginners. Activities on the Mid lane are somewhat similar to what you do on the Top one. It’s the shortest connector between the bases, and a lot of battles happen here. The biggest difference is that Mid laners should be ready to help teammates. They are close to both other lanes, Top and Bottom. 

Sure, this also means that support is more likely to come to Mid, especially from a Jungler. But even this aspect requires skills from the player — good communication.

Being a versatile player, able to boost the teamplay everywhere, is the key feature for the Mid position in League of Legends. You can find quite a few low skill champions for Mid lane in LoL.

While playing this position/role in League of Legends, you should take care of both the Bottom lane and your AD Carry teammate. When a Carry gains power in the match beginning, they are vulnerable, and a Support should keep opponents away. When a Carry shines with their might, a Support can roam around the map more and help other players — like placing wards all over the place, protect teammates in team fights, etc.

The aspect of being near your (more experienced) teammates is quite appealing for beginners. It feels good to be there with your Carry! The responsibilities are high, though. The Carry role is crucial for the team victory, but reaching this goal is rather impossible with failed early and mid game — which depends on a Support.

One essential aspect of playing LoL as a Support is to know the entire roster well. You need to understand what kind of help and where is needed. Some of the easiest Champions in League are still designed for the Support role. After getting a general understanding of the game's pace, don't hesitate to gain further experience directly playing a Support character.

This LoL position is exciting yet difficult. The main mission of Junglers is to farm resources from monsters and help teammates attack them opponents. Ganking on the lanes means a Jungler joins a solo laner to gain a quick advantage and earn a kill.

An obvious challenge here is to know where and when to farm. Junglers should understand the map perfectly and follow spawns the spawn schedule of the monsters.

Being mobile and active in different areas is a good feeling, though. It is worth your extra practice for the Jungle position. Some Junglers are quite straightforward and easy to play.

Bot laners stay on the Bottom lane together with Supports. They play ADC Champions, which are somewhat weak in the beginning but become a powerhouse in the end. It sure is hard for beginners to play a Carry in League of Legends.

You should be patient and know when to farm minions and when to retreat. You should feel the moment of becoming strong enough for your active offense, and you should know how to be successful in this phase.

The Bottom lane is one of the most notable and even respectful positions in LoL, but it requires significant experience and skills. Playing a beginner-friendly ADC in League of Legends is quite important: you don't want to apply an extra pressure on yourself with complicated abilities and gameplans.

Players of all skill levels and with any preferred position will benefit from watching LoL esports matches. Pro players inspire and motivate to strive for perfection.

The division of Champions by their positions is not strict and ultimate. It’s generally based on the common opinion of many players, but the same abilities can shine on different lanes.

Tanks and Fighters are generally the best Top laners for beginners in LoL. Tanks are awesome in mass fights thanks to their high health and good damage (especially in the later stages of the game). Fighters have good abilities for winning 1v1 and 1v2 battles. Quite often, such Champions are quick enough to escape unnecessary dangerous situations.

He is a melee Fighter/Tank, able to deal massive damage with his sword. Garen's abilities are easy to use: Q and W do not require aiming at anyone, E is a spinning move that attacks everyone around, and R is a straightforward massive strike. Garen is one of the easiest Champions in the entire League of Legends roster, and he still has a potential to be effective in fights.

The girl is a Fighter/Assassin; she is a good duelist, and it’s a clever idea to target Fiora’s sword against one chosen opponent. The Champion can speed up her movement and attacks with her E ability. The W helps new players in LoL do not panic under the pressure: it's a parry of upcoming damage and an effective strike back.

The primary role of Malphite is Tank, but the stone creature is also a Fighter. Malphite looks and feels immensely powerful. He smashes everything in his way, and beginners in LoL may find this satisfying. The W ability is especially strong, emphasizing damage. The Ultimate allows Malphite to attack somewhat distant opponents with a surprising speed. The Q ability is quite annoying for opponents, but you need to be accurate for land it, as well as for smashing the ground with W.

You may get inspired by the amazing Arcane show and decide to play Heimerdinger in League of Legends. The professor is an unorthodox Champion, but he is still can vibe nicely with beginners. It feels great to place his automatic turrets of the Q ability and watch them destroying opponents. The E bombs require precise shooting, but with the W rockets you can go berserk. When the abilities are enhances with the Ultimate, Heimerdinger unleashes his true power. LoL beginners should learn cautious play with this Champion, as he is weak in direct fights: keep a distance.

This little dude is a Marksman and Assassin. Playing Teemo in LoL is super satisfying, especially against close-range melee opponents. His shots are far-reaching and apply a super annoying blinding and poisoning effects. The Ultimate is not highly-damaging, though, and you need to adjust to this feature. Teemo is so good that he is often banned in League of Legends. Be ready to pick other best Top laners for new players.

The official roles of Mage and Marksman are suitable for staying on the Mid lane. Both are good rangers and can keep a safe distance from opponents while still dealing damage and farming minions. Some Fighters, Tanks, and Assassins can also do the job here thanks to their killing skills.

This Marksman/Assassin combines effective ranged attacks and great damage in 1v1 duels. Beginners to LoL may like staying away from opponents but still being able to chase and damage them. The ability to resurrect teammates (W) may be helpful on neighboring lanes.

Just look at this guy; his huge figure easily reveals a Tank. Galio is a Mage too. A great feature of this LoL Champion for beginners is his relatively easy combos from long-range to close-range abilities. And yeah, with some adaptation, you will enjoy the feeling of his might. The tornados of Galio's Q are effective during the laning phase and chase opponents throughout the match. The defensive properties of the W can be helpful for LoL newcomers who tend to overstep.

You have two styles with this Fighter/Marksman. Jayce can be effective at close range (Hammer), but he also can damage from a distance (Cannon). It’s a good variety to have. Still, beginners should know how to combine that in the dynamic play. Experience with Jayce may teach you different playing styles and show what you personally like more. This guy got a boost of popularity thanks to his presence in the LoL Arcane show. If you a beginner, Jayce may become an accessible Mid laner for you.

You take this Assassin, and you get a canine pack, ready to fight for your team. Naafiri is quick and has long-reaching abilities. It gives beginners the feeling of being effective in 1v1 duels. Naafiri's Q applies additional damage with the bleeding effect. This nicely combines with the ranged style of other abilities. While playing this Champion, you can keep a safe distance and then dash forward, dealing nice damage. Naafiri is a low skill LoL Champion, but you can grow as a player with it.

The Mage uses her powers to attack opponents from a distance (Q), disappear from their vision (W), lap to safety (E), and trap a few victims inside an interdimensional circle (R). Aurora is one of the newer LoL Champions, and her difficulty may be higher than other our recommendations. However, it is easy to adapt to her playing style. Just think as a Mage and Assassin! The most important thing is to like the general style of this girl.

One of the official LoL roles is Support, which nicely corresponds to this playing position. Mages can bring healing abilities to the table. Tank and Fighters are good at protecting their Bottom Carry.

As a Support/Tank, Braum has an unbreakable shield, which can be used as a protection for a Carry. Combined with Braum’s ranged attacks and applied stun effects, this makes the Champion a great team player, and that is a skill beginners should learn in League of Legends.

The Champion is effective from the start of a LoL match, so playing Leona as a Support allows you to fill the gap before the Bot laner gains power. Leona has tools to battle at a close distance (Q) and deal damage from afar (E). It is helpful for beginners in League of Legends to have a defense-oriented W ability and the Ultimate that damages within a pretty big area of effect.

If a position of Support is more about active offense for you, consider taking this Tank to your LoL matches. She is an awesome knight, who can ride a mighty horse. Rell feels in battle exactly as she looks: quick and super dangerous. She is accessible and still effective — even League of Legends esports professionals play this beginner-friendly Support character. Rell also has good tools to protect the Carry and other teammates in massive fights.

This Mage/Support does not look like a classic MOBA character, and that makes Seraphine exceptionally good for beginners. She shows that you don't have to stick to traditional archetypes and can express yourself through your LoL Champion. The girl sings to damage opponents from a distance.  She can shield an ally and speed them up. Seraphine can be a good Mid laner too, which also shows beginners how versatile characters in League of Legends can be.

Protection of others is the main thing for this Fighter/Support. Taric can heal and shield allies, stun opponents, and be effective in fights. You have a good chance to learn some simple LoL combos with this Champion, as Taric is one of the easiest champions in League.

Speed and damage are important for Junglers in LoL. Fighters are pretty good for this role/position. Some features of Tanks and Assassins will also be helpful for farming monsters.

For beginners in League of Legends, it’s a good idea to learn the Jungle first, even in training with bots or coop vs AI. Lurk around, explore, and fight to gain crucial experience. Then bring it to PvP with one of the following Champions.

The mummy is Tank and Mage, which makes Amumu quite good at mass battles against monsters. He can increase his magic damage, and he can attack many targets at once. The Champion shows beginners how to farm in the Jungle. Still, Amumu is somewhat weak in early stages, and this should be taken into account.

In a way, this Fighter/Tank simply belongs to the Jungle. Warwick is a scary wolf, who knows how to deal with monsters. The ability to restore some health while attacking makes the Champion more self-sufficient during long travels. Whenever it is needed, Warwick enters his berserk mode, for example, to finish an opponent. It’s a good Champion to learn the Jungler position. You may know Warwick from Arcane. After the show, the character got a very good visual enhancement.

As a Fighter/Tank, the Monkey King is very satisfying to play in the Jungle. He effectively initiates battles against many monsters, but Wukong is also a good duelist while fighting other LoL Champions. His general playing style and set of abilities is easy to grasp.

A Fighter/Assassin; when the Champion chooses a target, he becomes a killing machine. That works well against massive and valuable monsters. The healing ability can be very helpful in the Jungle. In fact, Xin Zhano is quite straightforward, which is a good feature for beginners playing such a complicated role.

Big Gauntlets look impressive in both the Arcane show and League of Legends. Would you like to smash epic monsters and LoL opponents as the wonderful Violet? She has nice straightforward abilities to hit victims and even lap through obstacles. Vi can farm effectively, and she is a threat as a ganking power. Attack Damage Carries in League of Legends grow their strength closer to the end game. In the beginning, it is a good idea for them to keep a safe distance from danger. The Marksman and Mage roles are good choices.

Still, let us say this once again, the Bottom position is not exactly for beginners in the game. The following characters are rather recommendations for beginners on the Bottom lane, not in the game in general.

As a Marksman/Mage, the guy is easy to play even in this difficult position. Ezreal relatively quickly reaches his powerful stage and deals good damage after the initial gain of XP. Ranged abilities and teleportation help the Champion stay out of trouble. Ezreal has simple yet effective combos, which is essential for a beginner ADC in League of Legends. He somewhat struggles against Tanks at a close range.

People really like to play this Marksman in League of Legends, and especially after the success of Arcane. This fame gives a motivation to learn the Champion (she is not too easy) and the Bottom Carry role. The damage by Jinx is amazing, but time is needed to reach that stage. She feels weak in the beginning, and her lack of rush movement is an additional challenge. The Q ability that switches between auto attack types feels weird compared to other characters, so you should get used to it. The E grenades require accuracy and a understanding of opponents' behavior. Shooting the W and the Ultimate of Jinx in LoL feels great: the damages from this abilities allows carry the team.

Miss Fortune is quite simple to play even in the early stages, but you still have to take care of her. The Champion depends on Mana quite a lot, which makes her vulnerable and less effective in the beginning. The speed of movement and the set of abilities make Miss Fortune a great team player, so LoL beginners learn to not be just a solo fighter. The Ultimate by Miss Fortune is one of the most spectacular in the entire League of Legends. However, you need to feel the best moment to activate it.

This Champion is a Mage/Marksman: Varus has good abilities for ranged battles. Varus combines charging 1v1 attacks with big damage and nice moves against many targets. While on the Bottom lane, Varus is great at team fights, even at relatively early stages. His downside for beginners is the necessity to be accurate with the shots.

If you watched Arcane, you certainly know that distant shoots is the name of the game for Caitlyn in League of Legends. The abilities of this Champion are whirling around her sniper rifle, but not all of them are very straightforward. Sure, Caitlyn has a usual ranged shot with her Q ability, and her Ultimate locks an opponent and then hits them with a super damaging bullet. But beyond that, the W is setting traps, so you should feel the spots and timing. The E knock the Champion back, and it is unclever to spam this ability in any situation. Learn how to keep your distance and save Caitlyn in the early game, and you will get a satisfying experienced as a ranged beginner-friendly ADC in LoL.

Feel free to experiment with different positions and play various easiest Champions in LoL. The point is to find your personal best — and then focus on whatever suits you and brings you joy. Make your pool of characters vast to get prepared for any bans from your opponents.
