Roles are important in Marvel Rivals, so you should know what all three of them do and how to use them to your advantage.
Marvel Rivals, like most hero shooters, gives it characters set roles. These let you know what their skill sets excel at on the battlefield. There are three roles you'll find in the 6v6 title that each have their own strengths and weaknesses.
We'll go over those three, what they do best, and examples of the characters you'll find.
What are the three roles in Marvel Rivals?
The roles themselves are known as Duelist, Vanguard, and Strategist. Duelist, of course, is your DPS-style hero. Take a look at Vanguard and you'll see many similarities to the common tank role. And for Strategist? Well, that's your healer and support role.
Some Marvel Rivals characters in a certain role may have attributes of another one. Take a look at Iron Fist, who is an in-your-face Duelist hero. He is meant to get up close and use melee combat to win, but his sustainability gives him Tank-like features.
Duelist
Think of a game like VALORANT, where the Duelist role is a prominent one. The same goes for Marvel Rivals, as it is a necessary role if you want to be competitive in the game. These are the heroes and villains that will net a lot of eliminations.
Or at least they should. Their goal is to deal damage and disrupt the other team from accomplishing their goal. They might use brute force, dive tactics, or even get the job done from a distance. Here are some examples:
- Scarlet Witch
- Spider-Man
- Moon Knight

Vanguard
The Vanguard role is important for taking damage and keeping the line moving. They have huge health pools and with the right amount of healing, can stay alive for a long time.
Vanguard characters are those you want to push forward with and take space. It is important to know when to back off, but also when you keep in the fight for just a second longer. Here are some characters in this Marvel Rivals role:
- Doctor Strange
- Hulk
- Groot
Strategist
Strategists are you supporting role in Marvel Rivals. They can do much more than heal, though. They can confuse enemies with certain abilities, set traps, and give damage buffs with the right Team-Up available.
Other players should focus on protecting Strategist heroes, while Strategists do everything they can to keep themselves and the team alive. Here are the final examples we have to share that fit this category:
- Luna Snow
- Rocket Raccoon
- Adam Warlock
