Will it be better than the mace?
The Minecraft LIVE September 2025 stream revealed the spear as the next weapon arriving in the Mounts of Mayhem update. It’s been 15 years since Mojang released a tiered weapon. This means expectations are high for this upcoming game drop.
Based on the preview, it looks like it won’t disappoint both PvE and PvP enjoyers. It has a lot of functionality that can synergize with other movement mechanics. This includes the Elytra, boats on ice, and even horses.
Let’s dive into what the new spear weapon offers, including its functionalities, and how it may be a game-changer for Minecraft combat.
How the spear works in Minecraft
Damage scales based on velocity

The spear in Minecraft increases its damage the faster you move. The effect applies by increasing your velocity by any means. This means you can ride horses, minecarts, fly on Elytras, or even ride boats on an ice path. As long as you go fast, the spear will deal more damage.
Charge attacks can dismount targets
On top of the damage scaling, it also has a charge attack that can deal knockback and force targets hit to dismount. Will the spear’s dismount mechanic work on Elytras? Possibly not. But it might be able to break your target’s flight, forcing them to use a fireworks rocket to regain altitude.
The dismount mechanic is a bit tricky to pull off. It requires timing as you can’t keep holding your charge attack and wait for the right moment. After holding the key for a long period, the spear starts to shake before lowering, canceling the charge and leaving you vulnerable. When it drops down, it loses its knockback dismount effect but can still deal damage.
Tiered weapon

As a tiered weapon, you can craft it using various materials just like all the other tools in the game, except for stone and wood. The spear can be crafted using copper, iron, gold, diamond, and Netherite. To craft the weapon, place two sticks diagonally on a crafting table and place one of the materials mentioned at the tip.
The higher the tier of the spear you craft, the more damage it deals. However, it also gets heavier, reducing the time you can hold it up for the knockback and dismount effect.
For now, there isn't much information about the spear except for the preview during the Minecraft LVIE September 2025 stream. We'll just have to keep our eyes peeled for more updates in the future.
Possible uses for the Minecraft spear
There are a lot of possible uses for a spear in Minecraft, both for PvE and PvP content.
New way to play PvP

PvP in Minecraft hasn’t changed since the revamp of the combat system back in Version 1.9, the February 2016 update. It was a controversial update as it changed how players use weapons in the game. In time, players eventually adjusted, while the rest did not move on and played the older versions for the classic combat system.
With the addition of the spear, PvP in Minecraft might be evolving again. It won’t be very significant, but it will open new playstyles. Mounted combat will be more challenging due to the dismount mechanics of the weapon. However, we get the feeling that this won’t be the norm until Enderpearl in combat loses its viability. Until you can teleport with your mount using the Enderpearl, most people will still be going for the usual PvP playstyle.
More ways to one-shot bosses
We’ve seen how the mace is used to instantly kill any boss in Minecraft with its mechanic. We can expect it to be the same for the spear. Horses can be bred, and their offspring will have stats based on their parents' speed. The fastest horse in Minecraft can run around 14.23 blocks per second.
If you have the time to build an ice path, boats on ice can go as fast as 72 blocks per second on blue ice. However, blue ice is extremely time-consuming to make, as you need 9 packed ice blocks to make one. On top of that, you need a Silk Touch tool to mine ice, or it will break.
Those are only some of the ways you can increase your velocity in Minecraft. We're sure the community will come up with more ways to increase the damage of the spear when it’s added to the game.
With that said, the Warden boss will probably end up as the community’s punching bag for testing the spear’s damage. We feel bad for them, but they do have the highest HP for a boss so far in the game. It makes sense why The Warden is the lab rat for damage testing.
New Minigames

One of the enjoyable aspects of Minecraft servers and custom maps is minigames. The spear basically unlocks a lot of possible ways to play aside from the usual survival gameplay. One of the obvious ones is jousting competitions. You ride a horse, or any mount you want, then duke it out with other players and see who is the last one standing, or mounting.
The community will have a field day discussing the minigames they come up with using the spear. We’ll just have to wait for the Minecraft snapshot or preview.
