Meet Rafayel, the immature and bold artist from Love and Deepspace, who has a strange connection with the ocean.

Rafayel is an artist and one of the original trio of love interests in Love and Deepspace (LADS). He's a man who appreciates art and delivers all his emotions into his pieces. They emanate compassion, they're unique and made to cause a profound impression on people.

Rafayel has a deep love for the ocean and everything related to it, which we can see multiple times in his pieces. But he is much more than he shows.

This article goes through Rafayel's lore in LADS, which might give you some spoilers if you haven't ended the main story and myths. Proceed with caution.

Who is Rafayel?

Rafayel, born on March 6, is 24 years old. Standing at 6 feet tall (around 183 cm), he possesses the rare ability of fire manipulation — an ironic twist, given his deep love for water. He also has a strong dislike for cats. You'll often see him in his usual white shirt and dark pants.

He is a very funny, sarcastic, and immature man. If he thinks, he will say it without a doubt. Rafayel from Love and Deepspace (LADS) is bold, always like he has nothing to lose. He loves sea animals, hates heights, and is always seeking the main character's attention after their separation back then.

Rafayel past

His paintings hide a big secret. Rafayel is one of the last members of an ancient civilization called Lemuria, conceived in the oceans. According to history, this was a very unique civilization with advanced technologies and a high investment in the arts: music, painting, literature, and carving.

Its existence was only proved in 2034 when the ruins of the underwater city were discovered in Linkon City. When he was a kid, he was very naughty, always teasing people and blowing out other people's sea lanterns. He learned various languages and even visited the surface once on his birthday, something he never told anyone. All he wanted was to explore the world on land.

What people don't know is that Rafayel holds a deep hatred for humanity, even though he doesn't feel the same with the main character. He loves her as much as the ocean. Anyone who threatens her or the Lemurians will face serious consequences.

Rafayel returned to that same beach every year — waiting, hoping — until the truth settled in: she had forgotten him. Years passed before fate brought them back together near a fountain. They caught a fish and named it Reddie, a small moment that reignited something long lost.

When you first meet Rafayel in the main story, he comes off as odd, maybe even distant. But beneath that exterior is a man shaped by disappointment and the silence she left behind. All he ever wanted was an apology.

Her absence changed him. He learned not to trust so easily. But when they met again, he made her a quiet promise: they would reclaim the years that slipped through their fingers.

Sea of Golden Sand

One of the most interesting Rafayel's myths in Love and Deepspace in the "Sea of Golden Sand". It is also here that we find more about his past. The main character is the princess of Philos, a woman with a special heart that grants people immortality, but who had to sacrifice her freedom to protect her heart.

She made 99 attempts to run away from the palace, one of which she disguised as one of the maids and went to a lake. In the meantime, the all town becomes alert as an intruder starts killing nobles — Rafayel.

To her, Rafayel was the only way out of the palace walls, and she was determined to convince him to help her escape. When she asked for his name, he refused to give it, so she playfully dubbed him Mr. Sea God, unaware of how close to the truth she’d come. He was, in fact, a former god — one who had given up everything for her.

During one quiet moment between them, she confided that people only cared about her because of her rare, gifted heart, not for who she truly was. When the guards finally caught up to them, he turned to her and asked, “Where do you want to go?” Without hesitation, she whispered, “The ocean".

Save the land or the princess?

After that, she is forced to return to the palace. There, she sees a fish and remembers a conversation with Rafayel. Slowly, other memories from her past surface, and she sees Rafayel as the Lemurian that was offered to her when she was a little girl. Rather than keep Rafayel as a birthday gift, even though he was a powerful being, she had escaped to the lake and set him free.

Back then, Rafayel promised to come back and find her, which he did. But to save his civilization, he needed to have her heart. As she gets glimpses into their past life as lovers, the Princess resolves to give back the heart he gave her willingly.

She'd rather he have it and save his people, as it was always meant to be his. Despite her desperate pleas, Rafayel invokes his magic one final time—erasing the Princess from the Tome of the Sea God. As her name vanishes from its sacred pages, so too do her memories of him, and of the life they once shared.

When the princess is informed about the king's plan to kill all Lemurians for plotting against nobility, she recovers her memories of Rafayel and summons him. They leave together and their relationship becomes stronger than ever.
