All ways to get the special Pokémon GO Community Day background

The December 2024 Pokémon GO Community Day is introducing a brand new special background into the game. For the first time ever, Trainers can not only re-encounter the featured Pokémon of the year but also get a special background too.

With these Pokémon having 1/25 shiny odds, as well as a potential background you could get some incredibly rare and unique Pokémon during this event that will be amazing additions to your collection.

Not every Pokémon will have the background, but some methods will have guaranteed odds. Here are all the ways you can get the special background during the December 2024 Community Day.

There are a few methods to get the special background during the event. It will be active not just from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on each day, but from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. each day instead.

The events Stardust, XP bonuses and shiny boost will only be active during the three hour window however so bear that in mind.

There are some guaranteed ways to get the background. There is a continuously avaliable Timed Research, awarded to all players that log in. This will require you to catch Pokémon daily for 11 days. Each encounter from that research will have the Special Background guaranteed.

Then, the December 2024 Community Day Special Research will also award encounters with the events featured Pokémon. These will all be guaranteed to have the Special Background too.

Finally, the following Field Research Tasks also have guaranteed Special Backgrounds.

There is also a Complete 3 Party Challenges task that does not have a guaranteed background, which is also a bit confusing.

Sadly, none of the featured Pokémon caught between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. can have the special Community Day background in Pokémon GO. This means you will need to focus on the other methods in order to get your hands on these unique Pokémon.
