Take on Altered Forme Giratina in Pokémon GO.

Altered Forme Giratina is returning to Five-Star Pokémon GO Raids on December 26, featuring until January 4. While not as good as the Origin Forme, Altered Forme Giratina is a useful Ghost and Dragon-type attacker in Raids.

Additionally, if you do have a good IV Origin Forme Giratina then you are able to use the Giratina candy and candy XL you get from these raids on either forme.

So, here is everything you need to know to take on Altered forme Giratina in Pokémon GO.

Best Altered Forme Giratina counters in Pokémon GO:

Altered Forme Giratina has a weakness to Dark, Dragon, Fairy, Ghost and Ice-type attacks. Having five weaknesses means there are a lot of different Pokémon to choose from. However, most Ghost or Dragon-types will also be weak to Altered Forme Giratina's Dragon or Ghost-type attacks.

Here are the best Pokémon to counter Altered Forme Giratina:

Mega Rayquaza
Dragon Tail & Breaking Swipe
Mega Garchomp
Dragon Tail & Outrage
Mega Tyranitar
Bite & Brutal Swing
Mega Salamence
Dragon Tail & Draco Meteor
Origin Forme Dialga
Dragon Breath & Roar of Time
Origin Forme Palkia
Dragon Tail & Spacial Rend
Dawn Wings Necrozma
Psycho Cut & Moongeist Beam
Rayquaza
Dragon Tail & Breaking Swipe
Mega Latios
Dragon Breath & Dragon Claw
Haxorus
Dragon Tail & Breaking Swipe
Tyranitar
Bite & Brutal Swing
Garchomp
Dragon Tail & Outrage

Altered Forme Giratina having a weakness to both Dragon and Ghost-types in particular presents a lot of excellent counters. Mega Rayquaza with the right moveset is a fantastic Mega Pokémon to use, as is the standard Rayquaza too. Also the recently returned Dawn Wings Necrozma is a fantastic choice too. This Pokémon is very powerful and isn't a Mega Evolution, so you could use multiple of these in your party.

Both Origin Forme Palkia and Origin Forme Dialga are also excellent counters, and were in the game very recently too appearing during the GO Wild Area event.

The best budget option here will be Haxorus, with its exclusive Community Day move. This Pokémon was avaliable through the December 2024 Community Day via 2km Eggs, so hopefully all Trainers have one even if they missed the original Community Day.

Can Altered Forme Giratina be shiny in Pokémon GO?

Yes, the Altered Forme Giratina you encounter after your Raid can be shiny in Pokémon GO.

Mega Evolutions to get you more Giratina candy in Pokémon GO

Mega Evolutions can help you get more candy and XL candy with every catch. Having a mega level 3 active that boosts candy for Ghost and Dragon-types will give you an extra 2 candy per catch, as well as a 25% bonus to your XL candy chance.

Here are the Pokémon you can use, thankfully all of these will also be decent counters too:

  • Gengar
  • Sableye
  • Banette
  • Ampharos
  • Sceptile
  • Altaria
  • Salamence
  • Latias
  • Latios
  • Rayquaza
  • Garchomp

The best options to use is Rayquaza or Garchomp, if you have either of those at Mega Level 3.

How many trainers do I need to beat Altered Forme Giratina in Pokémon GO?
