Conquer Super Mega Raids featuring Mega Malamar with this Pokémon GO raid guide!
Just a few months after its debut in the video games, Mega Malamar is now also available on Pokémon GO for this year’s GO Tour event. Together with Mega Victreebel, this inverted squid will appear in a new type of raid called Super Mega Raids, which are extra-hard versions of the familiar Standard Mega Raids.
At the max CP of 3554, Mega Malamar will have 208 Attack, 222 Defense, and Stamina of 200 HP. Considering the stats of this Pokémon, Mega Malamar might unfortunately get snubbed by most players, as its offensive power isn’t good enough for raids.
However, Mega Malamar’s real strength comes from its uncommon Dark/Psychic typing, which limits the number of weaknesses opponents can exploit. That makes it a trickier raid boss to counter effectively.
With so many powerful Dark- and Psychic-type Pokémon in Pokémon GO, taking part in Mega Malamar raids also offers long-term value. Stockpiling its Mega Energy not only unlocks its Mega Evolution but also boosts your Candy gains when battling in other Dark- and Psychic-type Mega Raids.
So, here is everything you need if you want to join a Super Mega Raid of Mega Malamar in Pokémon GO. You’re about to get all the important details when fighting this Pokémon, including its Hundo CP and weather effects that can either boost the attacks of your party or make Mega Malamar even stronger.
What’s ahead:
How many Trainers do I need to beat a Super Mega Raid?

If it’s your first time joining a Super Mega Raid for Mega Malamar, make sure you have at least seven other Trainers with you. In other words, a Super Mega Raid requires the efforts of at least eight Trainers to take down its featured Mega Pokémon.
During Super Mega Raids, the Mega Malamar will activate its shields, and each Trainer can only break one shield. If a Trainer uses a Mega Pokémon, one of its attacks can easily break a shield, making the raid much easier.
Before entering a Mega Malamar Raid, don’t forget to include a mega-evolved Pokémon in your lineup, and encourage your fellow Trainers to do the same. Taking down this powered-up boss will be extremely difficult if you don’t have enough Mega Pokémon to break the shields quickly.
Mega Malamar weaknesses and counters in Pokémon GO
As a Dark/Psychic Pokémon, Mega Malamar possesses one of the rarest type combinations in the franchise. Apart from the Inkay evolution line, the only Pokémon to have ever borne a similar type combination is Hoopa Unbound.
With Mega Malamar’s typing, it is only weak to Bug- and Fairy-type moves. Of these two weaknesses, Mega Malamar takes more damage from Bug-type moves, with attacks like Fury Cutter dealing an additional 156% damage.
On the other hand, Mega Malamar receives significantly reduced damage from Psychic-type moves. Its moveset involves multiple types, namely Flying, Psychic, Normal, Dark, and Fighting.
Despite Mega Malamar’s low damage output, players should not underestimate the bulkiness of this Pokémon, so try to bring the following Pokémon with you to counter it:

As expected, you’ll need to bring out as many Bug types as possible to ace this Super Mega Raid. This raid will certainly become a hard game for anyone who doesn't have any high-CP Bug types in their party, and if you have this problem, you’ll need to rely on other Trainers to bring their strongest Bug-type counters to carry the damage output.
When it comes to the best Bug-type attackers in Pokémon GO, Mega Pinsir and Mega Heracross are currently the best choices. These insects can dish out damage pretty quickly and make short work of one of Mega Malamar’s shields.
If you don’t have a Mega Pinsir and Mega Heracross, any other well-trained Bug types will do, such as Mega Beedrill, Mega Scizor, Escavalier, and Volcarona.
Mega Malamar can be a serious problem to your Bug counters if it can use Peck as its Fast Attack, so Scizor and Escavalier are excellent options as well, since they only receive normal damage from Flying-type attacks.
Which Pokémon to mega evolve
Mega Evolving a Pokémon purely for extra Inkay Candy might not be the most optimal strategy in a Super Mega Raid. However, if you’re confident that other Trainers can handle most of the damage, you can consider mega evolving these Pokémon to maximize your Candy gains during the event.
- Slowbro
- Alakazam
- Gyarados
- Houndoom
- Tyranitar
- Gardevoir (also a good counter with its Fairy-type moves)
- Sableye
- Medicham
- Sharpedo
- Absol
- Metagross
- Latias
- Latios
- Gallade
What is Mega Malamar’s Hundo CP in Pokémon GO?
