No, this Destiny 2 expansion won’t be canon in Star Wars.

Bungie has set about locking in the next year of Destiny 2 in what it's calling the "Year of Prophecy," with today's reveal diving into the finer details surrounding The Edge of Fate, the first major expansion following The Final Shape. But after that, devs also teased Renegades — an expansion heavily inspired by the events of Star Wars.

Complete with a teaser trailer stamped with the Lucasfilm logo and a tentative release date of Dec. 6, the Renegades expansion sees plenty more of the Destiny 2 and Star Wars crossover — but Bungie has stressed story elements and the game's campaign will remain entirely rooted in Destiny's universe.

As the Destiny community's hype hit overdrive during The Edge of Fate reveal event yesterday, Bungie dropped a short teaser for Renegades, the second expansion arriving in the Year of Prophecy. It was a short 37-second clip, but within we saw guardians wielding lightsabers and DL-44's, flying across deserts on speeders, and an unmistakable Empire klaxon.

We've already seen a crossover between Star Wars and Destiny in the form of cosmetics (of which there are plenty more with today's Rite of the Nine release), but a full Star Wars expansion in the Destiny universe? The hype hit critical levels — but the Destiny team has been quick to temper expectations.

"Just like we have taken inspiration from other genres, Renegades takes the space western vibe and aesthetic that is Star Wars and puts it through that Destiny lens," assistant game director Robbie Stevens said during the reveal event.

"Renegades is a one-of-a-kind Destiny experience. It's created a new lawless frontier that is emerging in Sol," he continued, adding the expansion will get a full reveal in September during the mid-expansion release of Ash & Iron.

Destiny narrative director Alison Lührs expanded on the design philosophy of Renegades. "Renegades is going to be very different from The Edge of Fate. It's going to be a definitively Destiny expansion; this is part of the Fates saga and it's going to push it forward in important ways."

She added it was an "homage to a universe that has inspired Bungie from the start," but don't expect our guardian to be uncovering Sith secrets or flying to Coruscant during the expansion. Renegades will be set in the Destiny timeline and act as a follow-up to The Edge of Fate.

At the same time, with the release of the new Star Wars armor ornaments and cosmetics, those who really want to lean into the franchise crossover can certainly do so!

We'll know more about Renegades in September, when the expansion gets its full reveal. For more Destiny 2 news stay tuned to esports.gg!
