Dota 2 PSG.LGD team changes name back to LGD Gaming

PSG separated from the LGD Gaming’s Dota 2 squad. The world-class Dota 2 team returned to being called LGD Gaming.

In a surprising announcement, Chinese Dota 2 powerhouse PSG.LGD returned to being called LGD Gaming. Originally known by that name, the team acquired the sponsorship of the Paris Saint-Germain Football Club (PSG) in 2018. Regardless of the name update, LGD Gaming remains one of the most renowned Dota 2 teams in the world.

PSG.LGD returns to LGD Gaming

The announcement arrived earlier this week from an official LGD Gaming social media account. Although the move seems quite major, PSG is still in partnership with LGD Gaming in their other fields like League of Legends. Therefore, the departure is exclusively with the Dota 2 squad. You can read their full, official blog post about it here.

PSG's esports division is still as large as ever. The football titans currently sponsor organizations in other games like Talon's League of Legends roster. Additionally, the organization actively competes in other esports such as Brawl Stars, Arena of Valor, and FIFA all under the title of PSG Esports. So despite the separation from LGD Gaming, PSG is still active in the esports community.

The departure from the Dota 2 squad surprised the community. Since they partnered back in 2018, the team had cemented their position as one of the best in the world. At the beginning of 2018, they won both Epicenter XL and the Changsha Major, not to mention being the runner-ups at The International (TI) 2018. In 2019 and 2020, the team faced difficulties as their only notable placement was third at TI 2019.

However, the following years saw LGD Gaming kicking it into high gear. They secured the title of champions at the WePlay AniMajor, claimed another second place at TI 2021, and secured a champion title at Riyadh Masters 2022.

Despite the loss of PSG from the Dota 2 organization, it doesn't affect the legacy that LGD has on the Dota 2 community. Regardless of the name that the players fall under, the Chinese squad is arguably the best in the region. Additionally, they intend to prove it once more at TI 2023.
