A crossover between 28 Years Later and Fortnite will arrive in-game on Monday, Jan. 12. Here’s what we know so far!
Fortnite is preparing to launch a collaboration with the "28 Days Later" film franchise in yet another unexpected twist to start the year. Although the game has partnered with horror IPs in the past, this one is somewhat off the board. However, the timing of this Fortnite collaboration makes sense, given that the sequel to last year's "28 Years Later" hits theaters in just a few days.
This article outlines the limited information available, including the expected release date.
28 Years Later x Fortnite arrives Jan. 12, but without skins
It's rare for a Fortnite crossover not to include a skin. The 28 Years Later collaboration fits into this category, according to reputable leaks. Despite being a relatively new name on the scene, these reports originate from the account AdiraFNInfo.
This individual noted that the crossover includes only a Pickaxe and a Back Bling. What these items could be remains to be seen. However, it seems likely that they will have some relation to 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which arrives in theaters on Friday, Jan. 16.
According to the leaker, the 28 Years Later collaboration will drop in the Fortnite Item Shop on Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. ET. We expect to learn the items in the hours leading up to the Item Shop reset.
Other horror properties that have appeared in Fortnite include Ghostface, Michael Myers, Leatherface, and Jason Voorhees. While not a mainstay, 28 Years Later will soon join that illustrious group.
What is the 28 Days Later series about?
This franchise began with 28 Days Later in 2002. Written by Alex Garland and directed by Danny Boyle, this film quickly became a go-to for the zombie/infected sub-genre. 28 Days Later centers around a post-apocalyptic Great Britain devastated by the "Rage" virus.
While traditional movie zombies are slow, 28 Days Later flipped the script, making the infected agile and aggressive. It became a phenomenon in the horror genre, spawning the 2007 sequel, 28 Weeks Later. The franchise remained dormant for nearly two decades before Danny Boyle and Alex Garland reunited for 2025's 28 Years Later.
Following its box office success, a sequel that filmmakers shot back-to-back, called 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, arrives in theaters this week alongside this Fortnite crossover. While the items remain a mystery, the timing makes sense. More details should emerge over the coming hours.
