Jack Black added fuel to the rumor mill that he is joining the Minecraft movie cast, with Deadline reporting he will play Steve.
Minecraft is the next major IP to hop on the movie trend, and the project is assembling a star-studded cast for the project which will include Jack Black. The news was seemingly confirmed by the star today and will be the second time he has collaborated with Mojang.
Jack Black's involvement in the 2025 live-action Minecraft movie was first announced through movie news site Deadline. Jack Black is a frequent face in gaming adaptations, playing Bowser in the Mario film and Claptrap in the in-progress Borderlands film. Avid Jack Black fans will know that the film will not be the first time his voice has featured in Minecraft media. The movie star read the official audiobook of Minecraft: The Island, an official Minecraft novel written by Max Brooks in 2017.

Will Jack Black voice Steve in the Minecraft movie?
Deadline did not confirm what role Jack Black will play, but there’s reason to suspect he will be a side character or villain in the ambitious adapation.
The movie website stated that "we heard Black is going to play the role of Steve". Steve is one of the default characters in Minecraft and somewhat of an icon. Their report however, could conflict with the site’s previous report that Jason Momoa will star in the film.
Steve would make the most obvious choice for a protagonist. If Momoa retains the lead role, it will likely be a brand-new character. If so, expect the old trope of a player getting sucked into the game. Based on Jack Black's previous work as an audiobook reader, he could also be a Minecraft narrator of some sort.
The plot of the Minecraft film is entirely unknown, but it could involve some named antagonists from the recently released RTS Minecraft Legends. The Great Hog leads the piglin hordes of that game, and it also hints at the origins of the Illagers. Jack Black could lead either Minecraft faction as the primary antagonist of the film, but it's currently all up to speculation.
