Octopath Traveler 0 officially announced; features eight character parties

Octopath Traveler 0 is a new prequel entry in Square Enix’s highly popular HD/2D RPG series. It was officially unveiled during Nintendo’s Direct Partner Showcase on July 31, 2025. 

Like its predecessors, Octopath Traveler 0 features comforting pixel art visuals, challenging turn-based combat, and thirty recruitable party members. It’s also a revenge story that takes place in the world of Orsterra and explores themes such as restoration and retribution. 

Two new unique additions in October Traveler 0 include character creation and settlement building. Unlike past entries, you can customize your character’s appearance, motion, voice, and even favourite dish. 

As mentioned above, restoration is an integral part of October Traveler 0’s story, though it also carries over to the gameplay side of things. You'll be able to collect resources and build your own settlement, which is destroyed at the beginning of the story.

Here’s the official description by Square Enix:

“This exciting entry to the series brings all-new features and returning core elements from the series, including the series’ iconic HD-2D graphics blending retro pixel art and 3D CG art, Path Actions to interact with other characters in various ways, the Break and Boost battle system which can turn the tide of battle, and more. And for the first time in series history, fans will play through the eyes of their own customized protagonist and be able to rebuild their hometown after great destruction is brought to it. Embark on a journey of your own creation.”

Arguably, Octopath Traveler 0’s defining feature is the option to have eight active party members at a time. Four characters occupy the front row (vanguard) while the other four remain at the back (rearguard). You can either command your vanguard or rearguard, which should open up new build and play strategies.

Octopath Traveler 0 arrives December 4, 2025, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 1 and 2.
