Okami sequel announced at The Game Awards 2024

After almost 20 years since the original Okami, the Okami sequel was announced at The Game Awards 2024 on Dec. 12. The reveal took place live at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, accompanied by a project teaser showcasing the Sumi-e ink art style.

The announcement then confirmed that Kamiya, the director of the original game, will return to lead the Okami sequel. In addition to CLOVERS Inc., which is the studio that he's a part of, this sequel will also be co-developed by M-TWO Inc. and Machine Head Works Inc.

Hideki Kamiya talks Okami sequel

Kamiya shared his thoughts about the Okami sequel as well, noting that everyone worked so hard to turn this project into a reality. He also acknowledged his friends who believed in him and Okami's long-time supporters.

"'Until next time.' How long has it been since the story was concluded with that? I didn’t think the day would really come, where I’d return to Okami and continue the story with my own hands," Kamiya said. "Even at this very moment, my body is filled with both a cautious surprise that this is not a dream, and a joy that cannot be described in words."

He continued, adding that while the Okami sequel is finally in motion, it's still a bud that's blossoming. However, his team is ready to fill the game with many flowers and do their best to fulfill the promise of "next time" in the best way possible.

Okami sequel confirmed nearly 20 years later

Released back in 2006, the original Okami was set in a Japanese-style world where players took on the role of sun goddess Amaterasu. There, they went on an adventure and restored life across the land. The game had quests and tasks to progress toward this goal. It also had the Celestial Brush game system.

Together, director Kamiya, CLOVERS Inc., M-TWO Inc., and Machine Head Works Inc. will create another adventure featuring Amaterasu and her friends. This Okami sequel will be in a Japanese-inspired setting once again, and more details will be revealed at a later date.
