Ubisoft’s “targeted realignment” results in layoffs at its Toronto studio.

Ubisoft has decided to dismiss 33 employees from its Toronto studio in yet another round of layoffs. This move is expected to further delay the already-struggling Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Splinter Cell remakes that the studio has been working on.

Many companies in the gaming and tech industries have been going through waves of layoffs for over a year now with different justifications for their cuts. In this case, Ubisoft claims they are conducting "a targeted realignment to ensure it can deliver on its ambitious roadmap."

Unfortunately, these layoffs from Ubisoft are just the latest in an industry that's been suffering from mass dismissals since early 2023. Companies such as Microsoft, Meta, Epic Games, Riot Games, and Esports Engine are all among the names of those making significant cuts to their workforce throughout this period.

This latest round of layoffs isn't even the first from Ubisoft in this timeframe. In November 2023, the company let go of 124 jobs worldwide. The majority of those, 98 jobs to be exact, affected Ubisoft's Canada offices.

Ubisoft's choice of office to trim workers from has raised some eyebrows due to the projects they were are working on. The Toronto office has been spearheading the struggling Splinter Cell remake since late 2021. Earlier this very month, the studio announced it was contributing to the development of the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake.

Regardless, Ubisoft insists that the latest round of layoffs will not impact their ongoing projects. "Our plan remains unchanged, and our teams are working to deliver on the Splinter Cell remake and other projects at the studio," they stated.

Whether that statement is true or was just made to appease investors is unknown. Needless to say, it would not be very surprising if the Toronto studio's projects faced delays in the near future.
