BLG ON responds to controversial biscuits chronobreak

In an entertaining best-of-five that involved a Yasuo pick, throws, and a controversial chronobreak, BLG came out on top against G2 Esports. The LPL's second seed took down the LEC Winter champions 3-1. They will now face the winner of Gen.G and Cloud9.

As mentioned at the start, there was a controversial chronobreak that had the fans booing after they were made to wait for over thirty minutes to resume the game. The pause was orchestrated by BLG's Luo "ON" Wen-Jun who was unable to consume his Biscuits from his Biscuit Delivery rune. Esports.gg had the opportunity to sit down with the BLG ON to talk about the chronobreak, as well as his appraisal of G2 Esports.

During the early part of game four, ON called for a pause at a crucial moment when G2 was about to secure a critical kill onto BLG's Peng "XUN" Li-Xun. The reason for the pause was ON was unable to use his Biscuits, a consumable that would have allowed ON to restore a small portion of health along with some mana.

After thirty minutes of waiting, Riot officials determined there was nothing that could be done and for the match to continue. This came to the displeasure of the crowd who had to wait for over thirty minutes to have no resolution.

ON speaks about the moment he called for the pause and what exactly happened at that moment.

"So around the time I didn't have mana so I would just try to use my keyboard and also use my mouse to try to use the biscuits but unfortunately I couldn't use it. So I just called pause a couple of times. but after that [chronobreak], they told us that this problem can't be solved so we just play the game like that and continued to play.

If we just continued our laning there definitely would have been some influence on our mechanics but after that, I just recalled back and sold the biscuits and I bought other items. After that, we just tried our best in the Rift Herald team fight. Luckily we were not affected by that."

It appears there may be a discovery as to why ON was unable to use his biscuit. During the pause, League of Legends streamer and caster Marc Robert "Caedrel" Lamont watched a clip of Vandril showcasing how the bug was occurring. The clip shows if you refund an item as your biscuit arrives in your inventory, the biscuit then takes the form of the item that was sold. Meaning if it was an item with an active available, the biscuit would have changed into that item's active ability.

Thank you for taking the time to talk to me today, you had a very close series with G2, what made the series so tight in your eyes?

BLG ON: "I feel like for G2 this team can be super good at exchanging all of the neutral objectives and they are really good at dragging the whole game into the late game where they are in a position to win the game with a team fight. G2 is a strong team and had a very good performance today."

Were you expecting this level of performance out of G2? They have been up and down this MSI from the play-ins to the bracket stage. 

BLG ON: "Yeah, definitely G2's performance surprised us because they did a really good job in kiting in every team fight especially in the mid to late game. And like I said they did a good job at fighting around the neutral objectives."

This is the third Western team you’ve faced in this tournament. What is your assessment of the Western teams, obviously this is your first time getting to play against teams from NA and EU, do you think they are close in comparison to the Eastern teams, or do you think there is something lacking?

BLG ON: "Definitely those teams all performed quite well and I think they are quite strong. But in terms of their champion choices, I feel like some of their choices may be off-meta. Especially maybe sometimes they will choose champions that they think can be played on stage like Darius or Olaf, and also they will try their hardest in the level 1 team fights, they also have so many plans and invasions around level 1 and always do so many early game skirmishes."

So with teams from LPL and LCK, there is a heavy focus on protecting the AD carry. Do you think this is where the Western teams maybe tunnel-visioned on that, and tried to just build compositions to kill the AD carry, and forgot there were other strong champions in the game?

BLG ON: "I really feel like having good protection for the AD carry is the right answer in the current meta, because some AD champions, especially some marksmen like Jinx or Aphelios, can really help the team to build a very high level of damage in the late-game.

And also if the team can have some champions like Maokai and K’Sante, these champions can be quite a tanky front line and can just use their CC skills. After that, we can have a very well-rounded draft. So it really feels like trying to target the opponents’ AD is not a specific strategy or tunnel vision, it’s just that they will look to target the right answer of the current meta."

So how has this international event been for you? This is your first time getting to play against international competition. Has it been everything you expected?

BLG ON: "Yeah this is my first international journey, and up to now I’m quite satisfied with my own performance, although here and there I made some tiny mistakes, but generally it’s been a good experience. I think the LPL is quite strong compared to any other regions, except for LCK. It feels like when LPL teams face off against LCK teams we will just have a half-and-half win rate."

So that actually leads to my next question. How satisfied are you with not only your performance, but also your team’s performance, and what have you learned from this tournament so far?

BLG ON: "So what we have learned, especially after the loss against JDG, we feel like we may have some issues in our shot-calling, as well as with some of our champion picks. So for this part, we really have to make some improvements on our understanding of the meta. After that, I think we made some improvements."

The final question I’ll ask is, you now face the winner of Gen.G and Cloud9. It’s heavily expected that you will play Gen.G, but from personally playing against C9, what can they do to have a chance?

BLG ON: "They really need to find a good pick for their mid-lane champion, and also they need to make the better shot calls as a whole team. And they will need to know what Gen.G players did in order to just make a good play against Gen.G."
