League of Legends is a game that is 15 years old, which means that a lot has changed since its creation. According to Riot Games, it's now time to adapt to some things as new scenarios and necessities emerge, beginning with the team that has been working on the game.

League of Legends team layoffs

As Tryndamere explained in his X article, this is specifically a League of Legends workers' layoff. It's important to clarify that no other teams from other Riot Games projects will be affected by this measure.

The co-founder of Riot Games assured this "isn’t about reducing headcount to save money — it’s about making sure we have the right expertise so that League continues to be great for another 15 years and beyond." The exact number of workers was not revealed.

In fact, Tryndamere guaranteed that the League of Legends team will grow more in the next phase of the game as new challenges start to exist. For the Rioters — as the Riot Games workers are called — the company will be paying "a minimum of six months' pay, annual bonus, job placement assistance, health coverage, and more."

Some of the impacted folks reacted on X, expressing both sadness and pride for their work and commitment to the game.

At the moment, Riot's current League of Legends plans include the upcoming second season of Arcane on Netflix, and an MMO for the franchise announced back in 2020.

The second wave of Riot Games layoffs

If you didn't know, this is the second time Riot Games is laying off workers this year. The company aimed to eliminate about 500 roles globally, which is about 11% of its workforce. Even with the huge success of VALORANT and League of Legends, many workers have been laid off since January.

The gaming industry has been growing a lot in the last decade, but that hasn’t always translated into increased investment in video games, workers, and media content. It's sad having to read about layoffs across various sectors of the gaming industry, especially when so many fans invest their time and passion into it.
