Wild Rift Icons 2022: Everything you need to know about the game’s first world championship

The inaugural Wild Rift Icons 2022 is here to crown the first-ever world champion.

The League of Legends: Wild Rift Icons Global Championship 2022 is set to happen from June 14 to July 9 with 24 of the best teams from around the world competing. Riot has allotted a humongous prize pool of $2 million for the first-ever world championship of the MOBA title.

Wild Rift Icons was initially supposed to take place in Madrid, Spain. This was moved to Suntec Singapore, however, due to visa issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here is everything you need to know before watching Icons 2022.

Schedule

Wild Rift Icons 2022 will happen across three stages which are are the play-ins, group stage, and the knockout stage.

  • Play-ins: June 14 to 18
  • Group Stage: June 21 to 25
  • Knockout Stage: July 1 to 9

Format

Play-ins

  • The 16 teams will be divided into four groups of four teams each.
  • They will compete in a double-elimination bracket within their group with the top two from each group making it to the Group Stage.

Group Stage

  • The eight teams from the play-ins will meet the eight regional champions in the group stage of the Wild Rift Icons 2022.
  • These 16 teams will again be split evenly into four groups and will compete in a double-elimination bracket.
  • The top two teams from each group will advance to the Knockout Stage.

Knockout Stage

  • The eight teams in the knockout stage will be seeded against a team from another group.
  • They will compete in a single-elimination bracket leading to a best-of-seven finals to crown the Wild Rift world champion.

24 teams are participating in the Wild Rift Icons 2022. Eight of these have directly qualified for the group stage for being the regional champions.

Wild Rift League (WRL)

The fourth seeds from the WRL, Oh My God, who had qualified for Wild Rift Icons had to withdraw from the competition due to visa issues. As a result, they have been replaced with J Team, who came in fifth place.
