Marvel Rivals revealed a lot during the most recent dev vision video, but one that confused many was their auto-battler. Introduced as a special game mode to be added with the induction of Ultron into the playable hero roster, it didn't take long for players to call the Marvel Rivals auto-battler game mode a Teamfight Tactics (TFT) "clone." TFT gameplay director Stephen "Mortdog" Mortimer even chipped in with his thoughts.
Marvel Rivals' auto-battler: Ultron's Battle Matrix Protocol
The devs called Ultron's Battle Matrix Protocol an "experimental" mode, like the recent Giant-Sized Brain Blast game mode.

In the short preview that we got in the 2.5 season kickoff dev vision video, the battlefield is split into a grid, and you and your opponent can place units on your respective sides. The units then fight each other, and the players can interact with them to some extent.

A lot of the heroes' kits may be changed in this auto-battler game mode compared to vanilla Marvel Rivals gameplay. The examples shown were Venom growing gigantic and Hela gaining massive attack speed on top of shooting in a fan. Strategist hero ultimates will now also deal damage on top of the healing they provide.

In between rounds, you can pick up cards to enhance your heroes and have the strongest board out of the eight in your lobby.

Players were quick to recognize the resemblance, of course. But what does Mortdog, the gameplay director for Teamfight Tactics at Riot Games, think about this game mode?

With Mortdog's return after a brief social media break, we once again have access to his nuggets of wisdom and unique insight into the space.
Somebody in chat asked him what he thinks about Marvel Rivals' "TFT" mode. "It's funny because anytime another game company makes an auto-battler, a lot of people will come in and ask this question," Mortdog responded. "The answer is actually always the same. To be honest, I think it's great! I'm really excited about Marvel Rivals' take on it."
Mortdog continued, "I think the most likely scenario for us is that people will look at that auto-battler and go 'hey, I kinda like the auto-battler genre, it's pretty neat!'" His vision is that the Marvel Rivals game mode will open up a new fan base for auto-battlers, and seek TFT as "the best auto-battler out there."
"I am glad [Marvel Rivals] is making it; that's cool! I'm interested to see their spin on it, and I'll be thankful for the new players!"
