What are the Creaking in Minecraft and why are they called the Weeping Angels?

The Creaking, also known as the Weeping Angels, is a new mob added in the Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4, specifically for the Tricky Trials update. This is the first asymmetrical mob, giving it an uncanny appearance unlike any other mobs in the game. On top of that, it can stalk you and is invulnerable to any form of damage. The only way to defeat it is to look for its heart and destroy it.

With that said, here is what you need to know about the Creaking in Minecraft, including some information as to why they are called Weeping Angels by the community.

Why is the Creaking called the Weeping Angels?

The Creaking in Minecraft follows a somewhat similar mechanic to the Weeping Angels, a fictional creature in the Doctor Who TV series. These statue-like beings only move when you are not staring at them directly, and can close the gap fast with just a single blink of an eye.

Mojang took inspiration from this concept for the Creaking in Minecraft. This mob will follow you around once you turn your attention away from it. The Creaking is invulnerable to damage, and the only way to stop it is to keep staring at it. However, the developers did give it a weakness. These mobs in the game are linked to a Creaking Heart that spawns randomly inside trees in the Pale Garden biome. If you can find the heart and break it, the Creaking will die.

The Creaking naturally spawns in the Pale Garden Biome. They spawn alongside their Creaking Heart and will be in an idle state unless a player stares at it from within 12 blocks. They only spawn during nighttime or during a thunderstorm. This means you are safe when exploring the Pale Garden biome during the day.

We already know that the Creaking will die if you can destroy their heart, which you can find in one of the trees in the Pale Garden. However, you first need to find them. With how thick the forest is, finding the heart can be a daunting task. Fortunately, there is a way to easily find it.

If you or a pet mob attacks the Creaking, it will reveal an orange trail leading to its heart. If you can follow this trail, you should find the exact tree where the Creaking Heart is hidden. Once you destroy it, the Creaking will disintegrate and die. This is not applicable when you spawn a Creaking using a spawn egg in Creative Mode.

These mobs often spawn at night or during a thunderstorm. It is best to just avoid exploring the Pale Garden biome during this time. If you can’t avoid the encounter, you can run as far as you can from the Creaking. It will stop chasing you once you are 32 blocks away from its heart.

The Creaking loot drops

You won’t get any loot from the Creaking in Minecraft. However, destroying the heart drops resin clumps. This item can be used to craft decorative blocks. If you attack the Creaking multiple times, it will leave resin clumps near its heart. This is a good way to farm this crafting material.

Alternatively, you can use a tool with Silk Touch to mine the heart without breaking it. It will drop as is, and you can grab it and use it as a decorative block. Just avoid placing it between two pale oak logs so it won’t spawn a Creaking. Unless, of course, you want to relocate the heart into an area where you can efficiently farm resin clumps.
