The Summer Update brings big changes to the game, including a new Legendary card, an Evolution, and a turn-based game mode.

After a few exciting but still reasonably small new additions, the mobile game plays its extremely powerful card. The Summer Update shakes up many aspects of Clash Royale, such as Trophy Road, new Badges, and Path of Legends, which actually turns into Ranked Mode.

With everything happening in the game, we can highlight three main features. Let’s discuss them here!

Spirit Empress in Clash Royale: Ride a dragon or battle with a sword

The new Legendary card can summon a unique Clash Royale character. Spirit Empress is the first one ever to have two forms, depending on the Elixir in your hands.

  • For 3 Elixir drops, you can play a usual form — the Empress enters the Arena alone, with a mighty sword. She is a melee unit, strong with her single-target damage, who may remind you of Knight.
  • Be patient to accumulate 6 Elixir drops and play the full version of Spirit Empress. She rushes onto the Arena riding her dragon. This form is a ranged warrior to eliminate your opponent's ground troops swiftly.

Spirit Empress is available in Clash Royale starting from July 7. In a way, she continues the vibes of the June season, How to Evolve Your Dragon, that brought us an evolution for Inferno Dragon.

Skeleton Barrel evolution: Beware of the second one

The Skeleton Barrel card receives an evolution with the Clash Royale Summer Update. The improvement is brilliant!

  • With this evolved card, you have two barrels, and one keeps floating after the initial damage. Skeletons drop from the first one to distract opponents, so the second barrel reaches farther — and potentially hits the tower.

It feels like a great unit to have for your Clash Royale matches!

Clash Royale Merge Tactics — An interesting variation of auto chess

Similarly to Brawl Stars, which launched its MOBA, Clash Royale gets its own auto chess mode, Merge Tactics.

It’s a turn-based battle, where you place the figurines of your units on the field, so they attack, and hopefully eliminate, opponents.

Merge Tactics is pretty clear about its inspiration. Yeah, there is Tactics in the mode name! Still, it brings some new ideas to the table. If you play two identical cards, they merge and transform into a more powerful version.

For the Merge Tactics Clash Royale matches, you can choose your ruler. The game offers two on launch.

  • Royale King — adds +4 Elixir after losing a unit.
  • Spirit Empress — +1 Elixir for each merge.

Check out more details on Merge Tactics in the official Clash Royale blog post here.

On the competitive side of things, Clash Royale has an exciting esports series up and running. From July 19 to July 20, you can witness The Calalas Cup – Gold Edition. It’s part of the official league that leads to the World Finals at DreamHack Atlanta, from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2.
