In an exclusive interview with esports.gg, Uniwatch goes into how Overwatch 2’s voice lines reveal hidden lore and hint at future heroes.

One of the many ways Overwatch 2 players engage with the game and its community is by tracking down hidden details. In Uniwatch's case, it's all about voice lines and character interactions. In an interview with esports.gg, Uniwatch, also known as UniwatchOW on Bluesky and X, spoke about how the project began, the impact of voice lines in storytelling, and potential candidates for future Overwatch 2 heroes.

How Uniwatch finds Overwatch 2 voice lines

In his interview with esports.gg, Uniwatch shared that he returned to the franchise during the early Overwatch 2 period after a long break. He gradually began engaging with the community back then, which he had avoided during the first Overwatch game. As a fan of voice lines and in-game interactions, he soon noticed that not a lot of creators were keeping track of them.

Therefore, he began experimenting with a workshop code by Hazelet and Faalund. This helped him find contextual voice lines tied to specific in-game situations. After testing multiple heroes and finding the system inconsistent but compelling, he began sharing these voice lines with the community.

He discovered that voice lines can play for multiple characters and groups such as Overwatch, Talon, or the Junkers. This is in addition to skin-specific voice lines plus rare ones related to collaborations. Elimination voice lines, however, are Uniwatch's favorites.

"So, how do I find them? I initially first go for elimination voice lines because those are my favorite," Uniwatch said, adding that elimination voice lines trigger for specific hero matchups and sometimes have a low chance of playing. Cassidy, for example, has specific interactions with Ashe and Reaper.

  • Cassidy to Ashe: It's not exactly personal.
  • Ashe to Cassidy: We said "Deadlock for life." I meant it!
  • Cassidy to Reaper: Reap the rewards you came for.
  • Reaper to Cassidy: I didn't teach you all my tricks.

Meanwhile, when a Junkrat player eliminates an enemy Reinhardt in Zarya's Graviton Surge ultimate, Junkrat says, "Thanks for holding him down. That hammer was scary."

Another fun interaction occurs when a Junkrat is Nano-Boosted by Ana and the former eliminates a Pharah. Junkrat says, "I'm her favorite child." In Overwatch 2, Pharah is Ana's daughter and Junkrat has a voice line involving Ana where he asks her if she could adopt him.

"Sometimes, when you get rezzed by Mercy and kill someone immediately, there's a voice line. In Junkrat's case, he says, 'Back! And already in business, baby.' I love him. He's one of my favorite characters," Uniwatch added.

How Overwatch 2 voice lines tell hidden stories

Voice lines in Overwatch 2 can also reveal interesting details between and among characters. Vendetta's line for eliminating Venture, for example, is spoken in Latin. According to Uniwatch, Vendetta says, "They who remain silent are taken to agree." What does this mean? It's voice lines like this that encourage the community to speculate about character motivations and relationships.

"Why did she say that to Venture? So, you can theorize. Maybe the Wayfinders are more shady than we thought. Maybe Vendetta takes issue with how Venture doesn't take things seriously because technically, Vendetta is opposed to Talon and Venture is also opposed to Talon. But I believe Venture is not taking them as seriously as Vendetta. So, she chastises them."

Uniwatch continued, "And that's one of the great things about voice lines like that. You find them and then start wondering if that is going somewhere in the lore because sometimes that happens."

Jiayi Teo, Juno's mother, for example, was name-dropped before Juno's release. This had players wondering if she might become a hero. More recently, Blizzard Entertainment hinted at Anran, Domina and Emre.

Overwatch 2 teases upcoming heroes

Speaking of Emre Sarioglu, he already has mentions in the game through Freya and Sojourn. That is, on Havana, they have voice lines about how Emre wants to retire there. Beyond voice lines, Emre is also central to Freya's latest short story.

Other ideas that Uniwatch floated include Hypatia, who is a friend of Winston and Wrecking Ball, former Overwatch agent Burnes, who is now linked to Maximilien's casino, and even Kiriko's mother Asa Yamagami.

"When Kiriko eliminates him, [Doomfist] says, 'Certainly her mother's daughter.' So what's up with her? Maybe she could be the fourth Japanese hero. Who knows? That would be really interesting to explore one day. So that would be few characters that people could keep in mind. And that's truly the magic of voice lines," he said.

As for final predictions, Uniwatch said he thinks Emre will make an appearance at BlizzCon 2026.

"They might tell a story where he finally has full control of his body. [...] Do you write him as someone that cannot control himself or someone that can control himself? Either way, either direction is really interesting if they want to put their heart to it. This year has proved [to] me that the lore is slowly but surely coming back to a very interesting place, and I'm really excited to see the future."
