Overwatch 2 reveals scrapped Transformers skins: Starscream Pharah, Soundwave Lucio, Unicron Wrecking Ball

Overwatch 2's Transformers event is well underway. It features a bunch of challenges, in-game rewards, plus skins for Ramattra, Reinhardt, Illari, and Bastion. However, what about the other heroes?

According to an interview with ComicBook, the Overwatch 2 x Transformers collaboration had other skins in mind before finally going with Megatron Ramattra, Optimus Prime Reinhardt, Arcee Illari, and Bumblebee Bastion. For example, Overwatch 2 art director Dion Rogers revealed that his team explored Starscream Pharah and Soundwave Lucio.

"Our concept team cranked out actually quite a few ideas for multiple characters," Rogers said in the interview. "Reinhardt was always Optimus and Ramattra just felt like that was our Megatron no matter what. But we did explore a few other heroes like Pharah as Starscream, actually. And Lucio — we tried to make Soundwave work on him."

Rogers continued, noting that Overwatch 2's concept team did a good job of simply exploring a bunch of ideas.

Meanwhile, Aimee Dennett, the associate director of product management, talked about the idea of a Wrecking Ball Unicron skin. Dennett mentioned the decision-making process between creating a skin for either the iconic Unicron or Bumblebee.

"[Unicron Wrecking Ball] was another one where we were like, 'Oh my gosh, such a great idea,'" Dennett told ComicBook. "And Transformers fans would love it, but it was sort of like, 'Are you going to do Bumblebee or are you going to do Unicron?' It's a balance, but it's definitely something we take into consideration."

Dennett also explained the reasoning behind choosing Bumblebee Bastion over other options, highlighting it as "a huge opportunity" to see the hero's sentry form transform into a car.

At the end of the interview, ComicBook reported that the Overwatch 2 team seemed optimistic about another collaboration. Rogers expressed a wish to include characters like Grimlock and other Dinobots.

When the finalized Transformers skins were revealed, folks shared their thoughts about them. While some people stated that they didn't expect Illari to be Arcee, for example, other folks thought about the what-ifs like Drift Genji and Shockwave Bastion.

These choices would have made a lot of sense. However, perhaps like LegoBrandMonkie theorized, the collaboration had to appeal to casual players or those who are new to the Transformers franchise.
