Pokémon Pokopia is almost here, but do you have the right Switch to play the game?

With Pokémon Pokopia releasing in just a few weeks, many are curious whether or not they will have to purchase a Switch 2 to play the game or if the original Nintendo Switch will support it. Here is what we know.

Will Pokémon Pokopia be playable on the original Nintendo Switch?

In short, no, Pokémon Pokopia will not be playable on the original Nintendo Switch. The game is a Switch 2 exclusive, meaning only those who own a Switch 2 will be able to play the game. However, it should be noted that Nintendo is beginning its stretch of not releasing games for the original Switch anymore, as newer games require better hardware.

This means that if you want to play newer Nintendo games, including Pokémon Pokopia, you will need to purchase a Switch 2. Those who do not own the newest console will be left behind with all the new Pokémon and other Nintendo releases. Hurry, though, as the game officially releases on March 5, 2026.

Cost of a Switch 2

The Switch 2 currently costs around $450 USD, making it one of the more expensive Nintendo products. However, with new Pokémon games, possible new Zelda games, a new Metroid title and more, the console has quite a bit to offer.

And, companies like Bethesda have already announced official ports coming to the Switch 2, including Oblivion Remastered and Indiana Jones.

Purchasing a Switch 2 is not a bad investment if you love to play Nintendo games, and with Pokémon Pokopia creating quite a bit of hype, you will not want to be left out. The game is currently up for pre-order for $69.99 USD and can be bought as a physical copy or digital.

To purchase the game or a Switch 2, head to your typical retailer sites such as Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop and more.
