Newer Rocket League fans may not be aware, but an international competition of this scale has been attempted before. Before the FIFAe World Cup feat. Rocket League, there was the Intel World Open.

The IWO, originally announced in 2019, was a global event officially supported by the International Olympic Committee. The tournament was intended as a never-before-seen country-based competition for both Rocket League and Street Fighter V.

Players would form teams with their fellow countrymen and compete in national qualifiers to determine who would represent their nation on the international stage. The Intel World Open's big finale was supposed to be a LAN event in Tokyo in the same area as the 2020 Summer Olympic venues boasting the majority of a $250,000 prize pool for each game.

Unfortunately, the IWO was postponed along with the 2020 Summer Olympics due to COVID, with the in-person portion of the esports competition eventually canceled outright. Instead, the best teams from each country played each other online to determine the best in each major region in 2021.

Now, it seems fans will get to cheer for their countries once again thanks to the FIFAe World Cup featuring Rocket League.
