The game was played on the most recent patch. There was no time to adjust to new movesets, and the players might face the newest powerhouse, Akuma.

This sure was a pretty chaotic tournament. Some top players registered but then decided not to participate in the matches. One of biggest names at the event, iDom, fell to the loser's bracket in Round 3 after a match vs. Ramsey. And then, he was eliminated by FlashMetroid in Top 24.
But players sure had fun with this new build. Even Akuma was spotted in the wild!
ElChakotay played Lily throughout the whole top 8 part. In the winners semi-final, he got a clear victory over Luke of ZachInABox. And then ElChakotay had to play against another Luke — of NoahTheProdigy in the winners final. That was a close fight, but ElChakotay won and proceeded to the grand final.
ElChakotay and NoahTheProdigy played again in the grand final. This time, the advantage of ElChakotay was obvious. He won two first games, and then, in game 4 sealed the deal.
ElChakotay is the Street Fighter 6 Combo Breaker 2024 champion. Congratulations!

Battle balance update 2024 and Akuma
Just two days before Combo Breaker 2024, SF6 received one of its biggest updates ever. The changes include:
- A new defensive mechanic, Recovery Drive Reversal, to punish offensive pressure on wakeup
- Adjustments to all characters, lots of new stats in the move sets
It’s impossible to learn the new balance for this period. Still, the SF6 players voted to have this madness at Combo Breaker. It’s a decision to respect and to enjoy its consequences in top-level competitive matches.
If the update itself isn’t enough, then the game has a new character introduced with it. And not just any character — Akuma himself. It’s hard to imagine playing the Great Demon at a tournament of this level after just a couple of practice days. It’s even harder to imagine facing Akuma as an opponent at Combo Breaker. Akuma is a reason enough to watch the SF6 matches!
Top players to watch out for
The combination of factors apparently prevented some top players from traveling to Combo Breaker 2024, including the update, which is not a Capcom Pro Tour (CPT) event or an official offline major. Still, many strong U.S. competitors are going to the event! Below are just a few names to watch out for.
- iDom is the winner of Capcom Cup 2019, CEO 2022, and Combo Breaker 2022. He is a legend of Street Fighter esports, and his performance is worthy of attention.
- Joey won a U.S. Midwest CPT qualifier in 2023. His results dropped this year, so it’s motivation for the player to prove himself.
- Shine has some really impressive results in his esports resume, such as 2nd place at the Red Bull Kumite 2024 - New York Play-In and the victory at East Coast Throwdown 2023.
- Dual Kevin won Red Bull Kumite 2024 - New York Last Chance Qualifier and was 2nd at Frosty Faustings XVI.
We can expect surprises from anyone at the tournament!
