In a strange turn of events, Duolingo announced that their owl mascot is dead – and the internet has responded.

Nearly everyone who has attempted to learn a new language knows of Duolingo. The application and online program, which launched to the public in 2012, has come a long way. Originally only for languages, Duolingo now features music, and mathematics, and even has a fairly odd competitive ranked feature.

That said, probably one of the most recognizable logos and mascots around the world is Duo, the bright green owl representing the application. However, in a strange turn of events, it would seem that Duo is now dead.

Duolingo's mascot is dead

On Feb. 11 via X, Duolingo announced that Duo is dead. Although the post seems highly satirical, it has quickly become the talk of the internet. The post reads as follows:

It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that Duo, formally known as The Duolingo Owl, is dead.

Authorities are currently investigating his cause of death and we are cooperating fully. Tbh, he probably died waiting for you to do your lesson, but what do we know.

We’re aware he had many enemies, but we kindly ask that you refrain from sharing why you hate him in the comments. If you feel inclined to share, please also include your credit card number so we can automatically sign you up for Duolingo Max in his memory.

We appreciate you respecting Dua Lipa’s privacy at this time.”

As you can see, the post is fairly tongue-in-cheek, but that has not stopped thousands from entering the comments to pay their respects – in a way. Many of the biggest and most well-known gaming social media accounts jumped on board to wave goodbye, while others came in to rub salt into the wound. All-in-all, it seems that everyone is having fun with this.

These are only some of the tributes paid to the menacing green owl that terrorized us for missing a lesson. But nobody is really sure what this means. It could be a complete rebranding from Duolingo or just some fun from their social media team. For now, we are enjoying the replies and responses, especially the ones relating to Dua Lipa.
