Riot Games confirmed VALORANT’s switch to Unreal Engine 5, but what does it mean for the game?

Riot Games has confirmed that VALORANT will move to Unreal Engine 5 (UE5), one of the most popular game engines used by game development teams and creators across industries. Black Myth: Wukong and Fortnite are some games that use this technology. However, what exactly does it mean for VALORANT?

What is the Unreal Engine 5?

UE5 is used for virtual production and game development, and it was created by the founder of Epic Games. UE5 has also been used in games such as Fortnite, Black Myth: Wukong, and more. Fortnite was the testbed of UE5 in December 2021 when Fortnite's Battle Royale mode received visual improvements.

UE5 has been crucial in helping design 3D worlds that are simple and scalable for a wide range of industries as well. These include architecture, broadcasts, live events, and television. Besides that, UE5 supports bigger files commonly used in building games for consoles such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S.

What is going to change in VALORANT with Unreal Engine 5?

For now, this technology won't change a thing as the senior vice president and head of VALORANT Studios, Anna Donlon, confirmed today. However, one of the main goals will be to improve the graphics quality of the game. “While I imagine folks would have many positive things to say about the game, graphics-forward is likely not one of them," she said.

Is Riot Games teasing a new game?

"There are many developers who are very excited about what UE5 can do for us in the future," according to Donlon. Could this mean that Riot Games is thinking about a new game? Or, as Donlon teased, is Riot thinking about expanding the VALORANT universe? That's no more information about this, but we can expect interesting changes coming to VALORANT soon.
