WUCHANG: How to beat Lu Bingzhang Boss with only ONE spell

Struggling with Lu Bingzhang in WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers? This guide explains how to beat him using just one powerful spell. Learn when to cast it, how to avoid his grab, and the best items to counter Corruption buildup.

If the Feather Priest Lu Bingzhang boss in the Shu Sanctum is literally driving you mad in WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers, here's a quick guide on how to beat this boss using just a single spell.

Lu Bingzhang is the second boss of WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers. The reason he can be a pain is that all of his attacks deal Corruption build-up, which when triggered will cause you to lose health over time. On top of Lu Bingzhang's ability to poison you, the Feathered Priest also has a grab which can cost you 50% of your total health.

WUCHANG Boss Guide: How to beat Lu Bingzhang

To easily beat Lu Bingzhang you can spam Echo of Dhutanga, a spell you automatically unlocked (equip it). To cast it you will need two Skyward Might charges. You will also need to be fairly close to Lu Bingzhang for Echo of Dhutanga to hit.

There are two windows to safely use this attack:

  • Cast Echo of Dhutanga after Lu Bingzhang's Aerial Slam (Purple)
  • Cast Echo of Dhutanga after the third strike of his 3-hit combo

Why does it work?

Echo of Dhutanga is effective because it can quickly build up Obliterate Value on Lu Bingzhang. Each enemy in WUCHANG has a different Obliterate Value. If you can keep up the pressure he will be temporarily stunned - a White Feather will appear briefly - allowing you go to behind him to perform a powerful backstab (Obliterate) by pressing light attack.

You can see how much Obliterate Value build-up you dealt so far via the icon at the bottom left of his health bar. (see image above)

Therefore, to beat Lu Bingzhang in WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers all you need to do is dodge the rest of his attacks and wait for those two opportunities. Below is an explanation of the counters to each of his moves, and how to survive!

General Tips

  • If you fail to dodge and get knocked down, do not try to attack. Wait his next attack.
  • Equip armor and clothing items with high Corruption Status Resistance
  • Equip a Spear and Longsword - good range and damage
  • Keep an eye on your Corruption build up and for his grab attack
  • If you’re hit by Lu Bingzhang's grab, heal and eat a Purple Camelia to remove build up
  • Summon Nian Suichang using the Bone Whistle for extra help

All Attack Counters

Below is an explanation of every move Lu Bingzhang has in his locker and the counter. Overall as long as you react well to his two aerial attacks and dodge his grab, you will survive.

Important: Given we do not have the official move set names, I've created my own.

Counters to Lu Bingzhang airborne attacks

While airborne Lu Bingzhang will typically either charge and throw a Red Spear (Move 1) followed by a Corruption Slam (Move 2) , or Move 2 on its own. Dodging the Red Spear is an easy way to gain Skyward Might charges you will need to cast Echo of Dhutanga.

Lu Bingzhang Attack
Counter
Red Spear (Move 1) : Charges and fires a red beam that deals AOE on impactCounter: When you hear the sound cue, dodge to the side to gain Skyward Might
Corruption Slam (Move 2): Charges, glows purple and slams the ground. This is his most lethal attack outside of his grab and on impact it can start to build up Corruption.

This will be the death of you if you let it build up as it acts like poison.
Counter: Just as Lu Bingzhang starts his descent dodge left/right or backwards. Do not roll into it as it will still hit. If you dodge successfully, this is your biggest window to deal damage in this boss fight.

You will be able to get 2-3 light attacks or pull of a spell, Weapon Skill or Discipline depending on the weapon.

Counters to Lu Bingzhang's ground attacks

Lu Bingzhang's ground attacks are much easier to deal with as long as you keep a safe distance. Continued aggression by you will lead to a potential grab attack, which is his deadliest skill. Avoid this at all costs.

Triple Threat: 2 sideward swings and a delayed direct strike to the ground)
Counter: Don’t be tempted to strike after the first two attacks, wait and dodge left/right on the ground hit and dash in to strike or cast Echo of Dhutanga
Corruption Strike: Uses his staff to beat the floor, summoning Corruption explosions from the floor based on your location.
Counter: Dodge away from the area it begins and then walk towards Lu Bingzhang for an easy hit
Magic Missiles: Fires 5 missiles with light tracking.
Counter: This move is easy to dodge but the key is to pay attention because it is normally a setup to distract you for his grab. He will normally cast this if you are playing very aggressive. Dodge away to avoid the missiles and get safe.
Stabby Stabby Grab Grab: Dashes forward (half screen) to grab and then impale you.
Counter: Pay attention after he casts his Magic Missiles. He will charge and then jump forwards to grab, dodge sideways to ensure you avoid it.

If he does grab you, you can not cancel it.

Four ways to remove Corruption against Lu Bingzhang

Fighting Lu Bingzhang will be the first time dealing with Corruption in a boss fight, a status effect causing you to lose health over time. Here's tips on how to remove it if you do get caught by his attacks.

By the time you reach Lu Bingzhang you will have three options to remove or reduce Corruption, and a fourth if you paid for the Deluxe Edition DLC. The Deluxe Edition offers six outfits, three of which have high Corruption resistance.

  1. Purple Camelia: The best option. Alleviates Corruption buildup or cures Corruption if you already have it. You can carry up to 5 at any one time.
  2. Fixed Origin Pill: Does not cure Corruption but it will increase your status resistance to slow down buildup for its duration
  3. Cornucopia Elixir: A powerful item that will both fully restore HP and remove all status effects (including Corruption). Given its rarity, maybe save it.
  4. Night Spectre, Tiger of Fortune and Soul Ritual Robe: These three reward in the Deluxe Edition of WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers offer Corruption status resistance. The Night Spectre outfit is especially effective.
