Sony set to acquire Bungie, the original Halo developer for $3.6 billion

Bungie, the developing studio responsible for the creation of Halo and Destiny, will be joining the SIE family in a deal worth around $3.6 Billion.

Sony Interactive Entertainment have announced that they are purchasing Bungie in a deal estimated at around $3.6 Billion. The developing studio will continue to release games on all major platforms despite the acquisition. Here is what we know so far.

Bungie Joining The SIE Family

Sony acquiring Bungie will see the Destiny developer join the ever-expanding list of developing studios currently under the SIE umbrella. The Washington-based studio is responsible for the creation of the Halo franchise as well as the ongoing RPG series Destiny.

Sony CEO Jim Ryan had the following to say on the acquisition via PlayStation's blog; "Bungie's world-class expertise in multi-platform development and live-game services will help us deliver on our vision of expanding PlayStation to hundreds of millions of gamers. Bungie is a great innovator and has developed incredible proprietary tools that will help PlayStation Studios achieve new heights under Herman Hurst's leadership."

"We believe games have limitless potential, and that to do anything worthwhile in entertainment, we must bet big on our vision," stated Bungie CEO Pete Parsons. "In Sony we have found a partner who unconditionally supports us in all we are and who wants to accelerate our vision to create generation-spanning entertainment, all while preserving the creative independence in Bungie's heart."

Bungie Titles To Remain Multiplatform

The announcement comes just two weeks after Microsoft announced their intentions to acquire game publishers Activision-Blizzard. And while there has been all sorts of uncertainty in regards to the particulars of that deal, Bungie have firmly stated that their games will continue to remain multiplatform, as stated by Parsons on Bungie's website.

"We remain in charge of our destiny," Parsons said. "We will continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games. We'll continue to drive one, unified Bungie community. Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play." These sentiments were echoed by both by Jim Ryan and Herman Hurst in the aforementioned blog post.

At the moment Bungie have been prioritizing the continued expansion of Destiny 2. But their fans will no doubt be looking forward to what this new partnership will lead to. What do you think about Sony acquiring Bungie? Let us know by tweeting at us @esports.
